Klappers

Kerry's Quilting finished Klappers over the weekend YEAH!  I used the same fabric for the binding as I did for the outside border.  This is a Judy Laquidara pattern that was featured in Quiltmaker Magazine Sep/Oct 2010 issue.  It was one of my 2012 UFOs.  It's so bright and cheerful.  The backing was purchased in Maryland during a trip there last year.  If you happen to be in southern Maryland you should check out Olde Towne Stitchery in Leonardtowne.

Sunday Stash Report, January 6, 2013

Wish that I could report something USED this first report for 2013, but can't!  I have three projects going on right now.  I've been sewing today on all three of them.  I suppose if I'd concentrated my day on one of them there would be something to show different.  Not the way it ended up.  The top photo is the sleeve that I've pieced together for Klappers.  I was excited to get it from Kerry's Quilting this weekend.  Klappers is Judy Laquidara's Jazzy Nights that appeared in Quiltmaker Magazine September/October 2010 issue.  It was one of my UFOs during 2012.  I'll be preparing the binding for it sometime this week.

This fabric is a Christmas gift along with the Creative Grids ruler.  Kerry and I finally had time together to exchange our gifts.  I've also got a gift card at Memory Lane to use!  Thanks a bunch Kerry.  I've been using my new ruler today and love it...

So here's my report for the first week of 2013.  Things are changing and there will be something to show for my efforts next week.

I've been busy with family this weekend, which puts me behind on blog posts!  So let's catch up a bit.  My August UFO #7 is Klappers which was done early this month but only posted the link to Patchwork Times just today. 

My September UFO #11 is Klunky Korners which I'm excited about since it is already done!  Klunky Korners was done as a swap that I coordinated earlier this year.  It is also an entry in the San Diego Quilt Show which is this September 13-15.

HERE are my 2012 UFO Challenges that will give you information on both of these projects.

I've not been able to sew on Kaktus since last Sunday.  I have five rows yet to sew to the top before the outer borders can be put on.  The flying geese foundations are ready; just need time in the sewing room.  While I've been visiting my family my Pfaff is being serviced.  It should be ready for me to pick up when I get home.

Sunday Stash Report, August 19, 2012

August 2012 UFO DONE!  I'm happy to say Klappers is finished.  Klappers is a Judy Laquidara pattern called Jazzy Nights that was featured in Quiltmaker September/October 2010 issue.  It is a combination of piecing, wonky cuts and foundation piecing.  The variety of techniques made it fun to put together.  I would have liked to have seen a finished drawing of the entire quilt printed as the orientation of the pieced border tricked me a bit.  Notice how the top and right have the HSTs with the light on the inside and the right and bottom have the dark on the inside.  I also found the blocks to be easier sewn as a 12 patch rather than the way it was suggested.  All said and done Klappers looks great!

I'm coming along on the HSTs for Klappers.  All the color blocks have been trimmed into the correct size.  I'll be working next on the background HSTs.  I figure I'm about half way through this part.  By this weekend (which starts Friday for me) I'll be working on the foundation star points.  There are 80 of these and I'm only one into that. 

Design Wall Monday, August 13, 2012

I've spent a little bit of time starting my August UFO Klappers.  It's Judy's Jazzy Nights pattern from a Quiltmaker issue.  These are the first units...lot's of HSTs.  I'll be using my Bloc Loc ruler to square them up.  Also are the start to the wonky stars.  They'll use the four patches and the template along with the foundation piece and the scraps you see next to them.  The stars are surrounded by the HSTs in the design.

After finishing the Quiltathon project yesterday I kept going on Klappers.  I cut the HSTs in half and started the first of the wonky stars.  I'll spend lunchtime either squaring up the HSTs or making wonky star centers.

I like what I see so far.  I'll be back to foundation sewing later tonight.  Hope you are able to do what you want to in your sewing room.  See what others are working on at Patchwork Times.

Sunday Stash Report, August 12, 2012

I participated in Judy's Quitathon that started Thursday, 8/9 and went through today.  I had my top done about 5pm.  I like how it turned out.  I made the borders a bit different.  The binding will be red.  Thanks Judy for bringing another great pattern my way.

I have all the flying geese done now on Kaktus.  I have a few more HSTs to make and sashing to cut before I can start assembly.  It was good to have the flying geese finally done.

I didn't spend anytime in a quilt shop this week.  I'm still working to get my health up to what it should be.  I spent Saturday sewing with Kerry which was great.  I worked on my August UFO that I'll show you tomorrow.  Since I finished the Quiltathon project I'll be showing a use!  See how others did this week at Patchwork Times.

Quiltathon progress...

From the first introduction about the Quiltathon from Judy I selected my fabrics.  I will be making the smaller size that requires 15 of each block design.  Brick red for the dark, a black and white check for the 2nd border, brights that play nice with the inner border for the squares, and a real cute Little Golden Books theme fabric for the inner border and center square of the two block designs.

Instructions posted for the two block designs, along with cutting instructions.  I calculated that I'd need:

3 - 3.5" WOF strips of the Little Golden Books fabric (yellow)

14 - 2" WOF strips of the brick red (black)
12 - 2" WOF strips of the brights (multi squares)

These were cut last night.  Today at lunchtime I'll sub cut the 3.5" strips and the 2" strips of brick red into their specific sizes.  I've decided it might be faster to sew my 2" strips of brights into strip sets then pick the stitches out where needed to make the set the size needed.  Block A will need two each of 2 squares and 4 squares.  Block B will need two each of 4 squares and 6 squares.  To pull the stitches out will only take the ripper three thread breaks...yes I think this will be quicker for me.

I'll be all set to start sewing which will be assembly style when I get home tonight.  I'll be sewing as many of the 30 blocks together as possible.  There is no further direction from Judy today so I guess we are to continue sewing from Thursday's instructions.  I can handle that!

Stay tuned for tomorrow's progress.  Going to have to start thinking of a name for this project...

By the way I made good progress on the last 34 FG for Kaktus.  They are on their final FG unit of five that are on the foundation.  I'm at the trimming stage, that I'll also work on during my lunchtime today, to be ready for the final wing to be sewn down.  Then all that will remain to finish these up will be to remove the paper.  I also have all the HSTs marked for Klappers.  Thanks Bonnie for getting me through that yesterday.  I'll be sewing HSTs tomorrow at Kerry's...our first sew day together in quite some time.

I can nearly see the end of the HSTs for Kaktus a future 2012 UFO that I've got a head start on.  The 15 foundations just in front of my tissue holder need only the paper removed.  I was able to do five of them at lunchtime (the group to the front left).  The 34 at the front on the right are at the third FG unit of the five on the foundation.  I've been able to do one FG unit to all 34 in an evening.  Maybe I should push that a bit tonight and finish.  I'll be so happy when they are all done.

The brown fabric is for Klappers my August UFO.  I've been cutting the fabrics into the required sizes this week during lunchtime as well.  Monday I finished the brights, Tuesday I finished the background, and today I finished the dark.  The pattern has wonky stars for the center and the eight points.  I'll have fun putting this one together.

Today I have a 30 minutes massage on my leg.  This will be the third massage to help clear up my sciatic nerve issue.  I'm getting better each day, but only right now by the smallest amount.  I wish I'd wake up in the morning and be back to normal...  Enjoy the rest of your week.

Design Wall Monday, August 6, 2012

Aren't they lovely?  I picked up a few items at the grocery store and these just happened to jump into my cart.  I don't usually go towards the pinks, but these were the prettiest of the bunches.  So nice to have flowers to greet you in the morning.

Kerry at Kerry's Quilting and I have been making a donation for the San Diego Humane Society for a few years now that goes in the silent auction at their annual Fur Ball.  This year is no different for us.  This one is a pattern by Myra Mahy called K9 Kwilts.  I'll be mailing this out tomorrow for the event that is to be held on August 25th.

I'm still making progress on the gazillion Flying Geese needed for Kaktus.  I'll have had my fill of Flying Geese for a while after this project is complete.  Fortunately my August UFO Klappers which is being started this week is full of HSTs!

Sunday Stash Report, August 5, 2012

I'm working away at Kaktus still.  I can't say how much I'm happy to have started this UFO before it's number was called.  All the Flying Geese are kicking me good.  I have an addition to my stash, but will soon show it as a use.  I was certainly tempted to get more because Fat Quarters Quilt Shop had 25% off all Gold fabric.  There was this one piece in particular...my will power kicked in.  Judy, if you ever need a Kansas Troubles fabric let me know.  There's plenty at this quilt shop.  I think I've brought into my sewing room all the neutrals I'll need to finish.  If not my Mom's found a great selection on eBay too.


Will you be doing the Quilt Along with Judy this coming weekend?  I'm planning too.  Yesterday I went through my stash for fabric possibilities.  I'll be using these.  The red for the black in Judy's pattern, black/white check for the red, and the cute Little Golden Books novelty for the yellow.  I thought the novelty fabric would be cute to fussy cut in the blocks centers.  The scale of it is small enough where a good portion would show.  The remaining fabrics are all from the colors in the novelty fabric.  All from stash and no plans to get anything else.  I'll be making the smaller of the two sizes and perhaps change the last border to be the binding still with the red fabric.


I also pulled fabrics for my #6 August UFO, Klappers.  Seems my mind was thinking along the same colors for the two projects I was rummaging my stash for.  That teal blue is one of my favorites.  More on Klappers tomorrow.  Check back then, but right now check out other quilters using up their stash at Patchwork Times.

Wednesday Judy and Jo identified the August challenges that will keep me busy the next 28 days. 

First from Judy's Patchwork Times I'll be working on #7 from the list.  My #7 is Judy's Jazzy Nights design from Quiltmaker's Sep/Oct 2010 issue.  I'll need to figure out my dark fabric; hopefully from yardage I have in my stash.  Thought at first I'd use Kona Black, but maybe I'll change my mind.  Once that's known the scrappy HSTs can get started.  There are lots of them...but they'll go quick.  I'll more than likely use my Bloc Loc rulers to square them up before block assembly.  I'll be calling my quilt Klappers.

Second from Jo's Country Junction Quilt Square Quilt A Long it's "Your Choice" from the Quilt Squares #4 pattern by Lori Smith.  I decided the Double T needed to be made.

I was on a role making July's block and kept rolling.  So I'm ahead of schedule YIPPEE!  This will be the last design from this pattern.  We used Quilt Squares #1 pattern for the first four months of 2012 and we will use Quilt Squares #6 pattern for the last four months.  These are my blocks so far.

     

I continue working on Kaktus #6 on my list of 2012 UFOs.  Looks like I'll definitely need more neutrals.  I think a visit next to Fat Quarters Quilt Shop in Vista, CA is in order.  #6 has yet to be called; sure happy I've had time to get a start on this one.  Not sure I could have finished it in a month.  You can look back on previous posts for where I am on this project or come back Monday when you'll see what's on my design wall.  

Thanks for all your well wishes on my health.  It is real slow but I'm getting a little better with each passing day.  I worked this entire week making a a bit of the lost time from the week before.  Wednesday I started massage with another appointment tonight.  Physical Therapy is scheduled to start on August 20th.  I'm told this will take some time and it's proving to be true.  At least now I can sit at my sewing machine...that is of course if I'm not too tired from the crazy hours I've been working.  I can't wait until tomorrow when I can sleep in and stay in my PJs until I feel the desire to change.  DH has been great helping out with meals and clean up.  Koko would have STARVED in the morning two weeks ago until I could get his can of Fancy Feast in front of him.  I sure miss those DH prepared breakfasts this week :(.

Rosie's Calico Cupboard

After looking everywhere for the black and white check I could have saved myself by a visit to Rosie's to start.  Not just one but two different 1/4" checks to choose from so I got both.  I also purchased enough of each to last me for another project or two in the future.  I used the check on the bottom of the stack.  I also found a good neutral multi colored confetti piece that will come in handy soon for another of my remaining 2012 UFOs.  The dog bone piece will do well to add to the San Diego Humane Society quilt that Kerry and I will donate this year.

I also got my prize this past week during a visit with Mary.  Turns out I sold the most Sunshine Opportunity Quilt tickets this year.  The "leftovers" made a great wall hanging that I'm happy to have.  The fall theme I decorate my home with is scarecrows; this scarecrow will fit right in.

This week I did make yet another purchase, but unlike last week I've got usage to record.  Kontinental and Klowning were both finished along with the Hot Air Balloon top for my Mom.

On Monday I went to Amidon Quiltworks in Poway.  Sadly they will be closing their store front mid July.  Nancy wants to try something different.  The plan is to sell what remains of the fabrics online or on the road as she travels with the "show circuit".  All of these fabrics should find homes this year.  The ones on the left are neutrals for a UFO with Judy that hasn't yet been selected.  The group in the middle will each go to different projects two not yet started and the other I'll use as a back for Knickels.  The largest stack on the right are for backs mostly with the two smaller pieces just because I thought they'd fill short falls in my stash.

On Tuesday I went to Quilters Paradise.  I couldn't find the black and white check, clown themed fabric, or a cute dog themed fabric that I was hunting.  I did find this great confetti dot that was near the end of the bolt.  You can see the rest came home with me =^.^=.  I've had this fabric before and loved it.

Saturday I met up with Kerry for lunch.  Afterwards we headed over to Quilters Choice which again sadly will be closing their store at the end of July.  Kathy wants to retire and travel with her husband instead of being tied to a store.  There are lots of fabrics available in her shop.  All of these have projects to go into.  The two groups in the center and left are part of what I've been hunting for.  I resigned on the clown themed fabric and chose the wild zig zag print with the teal as the inner border that will complete my July UFO with Judy that I'm calling Klowning.  The fabrics in the middle are the dog themed fabrics for the San Diego Humane Society Fur Ball donation due end of August.  The three on the right are for another UFO with Judy not yet selected.

I'm not happy to record purchases, especially without recording a use...but sometimes it just has to be that way.  I'll be sewing away with six more UFOs and who knows what else to bring the net to a figure I'm happy with before the end of the year.

Today thankfully is HUMP DAY!  A long week for me considering last week I had two and a half days off.  This week it's five full nine hour days.  I took a lunch break looking for this fabric that will be the sashing for the Hot Air Balloon quilt of my Mom's. 

I was also looking for a border fabric for the San Diego Humane Society quilt (pattern shown #713 K9 Kwilts) that Kerry and I will be donating for the 26th Auunal Fur Ball to be held August 25th.

I went first to Quilter's Paradise in Escondido where of course I found something to purchase...but of course not what I was looking for.  I've purchased this fabric once before and loved it. It was at the end of the bolt so...I brought the rest home. 

Next on the way back to the office I stopped at Bits and Pieces also in Escondido and was more than surprised to see the store closed.  I took out my iPhone and tried to track down where they may have moved to without luck.  I don't recall any notice of them closing.  I sure hope not as I really liked the shop.  I recall the taco shop that was next door having a fire and smoke damage to lots of the fabrics, but certainly not a closing of the store.  Calling the shop gave me a change of number which I tried but no answer.  A search for location only gave me the one I was sitting in front of.  Looks grim...anyone know what happened?  So I'm still in need of a black and white ~1/4" check and 5/8 yard of dog theme border fabric.  Kerry is going to look at a couple of the quilt shops in the south part of the county in the coming days.  Hope she'll have some luck. 

If not this piece from Quilter's Paradise might just need to work.  Novelty dog fabric is not so easy to locate.

Meanwhile I continue working on Klowning.  Have all the blocks together along with the sashing.  Rows are next!

The mail person brought me Susie's Crabapple Swap blocks today.  They look great Susie.  I know you had a tough time getting them done recovering from your recent elbow surgery.  Get better quick we'll be doing another swap in the not too distant future.  So that leaves five more to turn in...you know who you are!!

2012 UFO Challenges, December 20, 2011

Here are my 2012 UFO Challenges:

#1 Kokonut No!  This is a pattern called Sunshine Pineapple a Quilting Time Pattern 103.  I've been wanting to make this one for years...since 2007 when I purchased the pattern.  2012 is it's year!

#2 Kamile.  This pattern is called Perennial Petals from Quiltmaker Magazine Issue Mar/Apr 2011 by Caroline Reardon.  I've started this one only through copying the pattern for the paper piecing technique that will be used to assemble it.  Should be easy to grab from my stash.

#3 Klowning.  Bonnie Hunter's Little Monkey design that was offered on her blog last year.  I'm still not completely sold with this name.  It will use up a lot of stash which is famous for Bonnie's designs.

#4 Knoted.  Judy Laquardia design called Note to Self.  This one caught my attention.  Looks like a simple design, but has a bunch of character.  I'm all about using up my stash and this one will be good for it too!

#5 Kontinuum.  Judy Laquardia design called Connect the Dots.  I love Judy's borders.  She's so clever in her designs.  You'll be noticing that I've got lots of her designs in my UFO list for 2012.

#6 Kaktus.  Design called Prickly Pear that was in Quilters News Magazine in June 1997 by Terri Lynn Ballard.  Yep this one is a pattern I've been thinking about for a long time.  It has lots of pieces but again notice the trend USE STASH!

#7 Klappers.  Judy Laquardia design called Jazzy Nights that was offered in Quiltmaker Magazine Issue Sep/Oct 2010.  The name is funny don't you think?  Can't wait to get to this one...again a stash buster for me...except the Kona black fabric that I'll be needing.  Love that Kona black!

#8 Kollinwood Konnections.  Judy Laquardia design called Road to Brownwood that was offered on her blog last year.  Collinwood happens to be the street that my parents live on.  Just a simple change of letters.  I'd say I have connections to Collinwood wouldn't you? 

#9 Kooky Kins.  A Buggy Barn pattern called Crazy Jacks.  This will be the second project from this pattern.  This one will be for me.  I've already got most of the fabrics set aside.  If you've never tried one of the Buggy Barn patterns I suggest them.  Very whimsical designs and a totally different approach to putting the pieces together!

#10 Kommodore.  A Judy Laquardia design called Indigo that was offered on her blog last year.  Everyone feel in love with this project that Judy offers free on her blog.  It was for her Monochromatic Challenge when the color was Indigo that month.  I'm not sure I have enough of these colors, but it's fabulous in these blue purple tones.  You may wonder what Kommodore has to do with Indigo...well commodore happens to be the color to the left of indigo in Sherwin Williams palate of colors LOL!  I just may be raiding my Mom and Kerry's stash...watch out you two!

#11 Klunky Korners.  I've had two suggestions on a name for this project; Kat in the Korner and Klunky Korners...  A Bonnie Hunter design that I'm coordinating in a block swap with 15 others.  The swap blocks are due 2/29/12.  Joan and Collette are already finished with their swap blocks.  Mom and I cut out pieces when I was visiting during Thanksgiving 2011.  Our swappers are in southern Maryland and the San Diego, Ca area.

#12 Koppice.  A pattern from the Temecula Quilt Co called A Tree of Life.  This one is tiny at 11" x 13".  The month this is selected will be an easy month.

I'm also going to work at getting done what was on the 2011 UFO list that didn't get finished.  Koda's Keeper, Kartwheels, Komplicated, Kaskade, Kurry, Krossfire, and Koriander Kompass.  Yes I'm not happy that I didn't get these done; I'm not the type to set goals without results.  A 30% success just isn't what it should be!
