Design Wall Monday, December 30, 2013

Our last Design Wall Monday for 2013...  I've had so much fun sharing my doings with you throughout.  You've left me with wonderful comments that have inspired me to look at challenges differently.  Can't fail to mention that you've also inspired many "K" quilt names.  I'm looking forward to 2014 in these same ways.

To finish off the year with a bang I was able to complete Kilowatts.  The new owner will love this quilt.  I plan on a solid white back where my quilter can show off her talent.  I think it will be a great addition to the very busy black and whites of this pineapple beauty!

With the 30's fabric I have in my stash this Block of the Month with Sunshine Quilt Guild by Janet is ready for our next meeting in January.  I tried a 30's in red for the second round of squares, but it was just way too much in my opinion.  The dots made both the other rounds of 30's look perfect.
Part 5 is finished of Celtic Solstice.  I'm ready to see the next clue on Friday in this design.
Currently on my table is getting back to Krossfire.  I think I'm close to half way finished.  There is still a lot to do, but I'm getting there on this delinquent 2011 UFO.  Between Krossfire and Celtic Solstice I plan to get my Red Strings/9-Patches done for a swap I'm coordinating that is due the end of January.  Most of what I have yet to finish are the 9-Patches.  Those who have made Talking Turkey by Bonnie Hunter...why 2 -5/8" units to make those 9-Patches?

Enjoy others as they close their year of 2013 projects through the links at Patchwork Times.

Sunday Stash Report, December 29, 2013

Here we are another year of moving our stash...sometimes in and hopefully much more out!  I am certainly happy with my year of stash movement.  Again this year I am on the upswing with more out than in.  Don't think it would be possible to move so much stash around if it were not for UFO Challenges.  I challenge myself in a couple of ways; I seek out those projects that just need to finish or look for patterns I have been wanting to make for a long time and always try to keep to my stash to get everything done.

My last purchase of 2013 was at Rosie's Calico Cupboard this week.  I tried to find something to work for the back of Kingsford Kove (December's UFO) from my stash without luck.  I thought sure something would work, but instead brought the piece of gray home.  I picked up the last fabrics needed for Kilowatts.  (Kilowatts was made a bit larger than a standard queen so there was lots of yardage needed to make it.)  The white for the inner border and back, the black print for the outer border, and the solid black for the binding.  The 30's paisley print will be for the sleeve of Kookaburra.  I did finish Kilowatts so I conclude with yardage in both the used and the purchased categories.

I am looking forward to using more stash in 2014.  The stats go back to zeros!  Hope you had the year you wanted using up your stash.

Used this week:   36.5 yards
Used YTD:  377.25 yards
Purchased this week:  17 yards
Purchased YTD:  142.25 yards
Net Fabric Used in 2013:  235 yards

2013 At A Glance, December 27, 2013

I have had another year of wonderful projects; 33 in fact with several waiting their turn in the quilting queue at Kerry's Quilting.
Krazy Krones
in line for quilting

Fabric purchases were a must, but everything started with my "pretty much manageable" stash.  350 yards came from there and only a fraction was purchased from local quilt shops to finish them.
As with previous years, 2013 had me committed to finishing a project every month with a UFO challenge called Thirteen in '13 at www.52Quilts.com.

Kushy Kourt
2013 UFO
You can see my 13 HERE, all of them done!  I don't let dust settle on my projects so nearly all of mine are UFO patterns; designs I have been collecting wanting to make and finally taking the time to do it.  My list for the coming year is already created (HERE), so I am all set for January's project once again with www.52Quilts.com.

I attended a handful of workshops in 2013.  My projects from these classes are finished except one that goes to my 2014 UFO list.

The San Diego Humane Society and the Scoops of Love Project for 1st Graders in Moore, Oklahoma benefited from donations.  The Scoops of Love project was overwhelmed to receive more quilts than they thought possible with plenty to pass out to other grades at this elementary school that was destroyed during the storms.  Today Part 5 of Bonnie Hunter's 2013 Mystery was released.  I am up-to-date and ready to sew this newest unit.  I still haven't settled on a "K" name for this project.

Three quilts were entered in quilt shows and two of these were excepted to the jurried Road to California Quilter's Conference and Showcase (RD2CA) in January 2014.  I already feel honored to be included in the show, but I hope you wish me luck at a chance to win a prize or two...

By far the best "K" name in 2013 was Kwitcherbitchin.  You see Mom mistakenly used grays where they weren't to go in a neutral string swap causing her to remake.  I got the mistakes...  You'll see the other creative names inspired many times by friends and family along with their photos in my parade of finishes in 2013.

Merry Christmas, December 25, 2013

Merry Christmas!  May your holidays be filled with family and friends...

Today I have a big day in the kitchen.  Actually it started last night making a cranberry pomegranate mold, a pumpkin and an apple pie.  Today I have the yams boiling in preparation for the casserole that they will make.  Next up in a little over one hour our 17 pound turkey will be put in the oven.  Then there is peeling the potatoes and making the biscuits.  Finally setting up some munchies and a cookie tray.  Family expected around 2 pm.  There will be eight of us at our dinner table.  Looking forward to the day.  It is gorgeous outside.

Design Wall Monday, December 23, 2013

Part 4 done...bring on Part 5.  I like the way these 4-patches look.  I sure am getting curious on what design Celtic Solstice will become.  I sure am thinking it's one of the floor patterns Bonnie keeps introducing each Part with.
Kilowatts is ready for assembly into rows.  The pieces on the right are the bottom row.  Next comes a solid black inner border and then the final border which will be more on the black side.  Once the hectic time just before Christmas has settled I'll have my full attention on getting this project done.

See more fabulous works in cloth through the links today at Patchwork Times.

Sunday Stash Report, December 22, 2013

I went to Rosie's Calico Cupboard on Friday.  I went for a back for Kookaburra in mind.  Rosie's nearly always has what you looking for.  I came home with the piece on the right.  I thought to look for something in yellow, but I liked the way the colors of this piece pulled in so many of what's in the top.

I've been sewing today on Part 4 of Bonnie's mystery and have Kilowatts all set for sewing together the rows.  Too many other Holiday things driving my attention this weekend.  I'm hopeful to find the yardage for Kilowatts in the used stats next week.

Hope your Sunday was a good one.  Only a few more days till Santa arrives.

Used this week:   0 yards
Used YTD:  340.75 yards
Purchased this week:  5 yards
Purchased YTD:  125.25 yards
Net Fabric Used in 2013:  215.5 yards

My niece Moran celebrating her 6th Birthday (she is a Christmas Day baby).  Wish I could have been there in Virginia where her party was held at Chuckie Cheese.  I'd have skipped the pizza.....  Happy Birthday Morgan!
The last blocks of Kilowatts are having the paper foundations removed.  This was first thing in the morning.

There are Holiday things to do today...I finished our 2013 Newsletter and figured out the steps to print out address labels.  Sewing on Sunday!

Design Wall Monday, December 16, 2013

Part 3 is done.  I like constructing HSTs and pinwheels so this step was fun for me.  Anxious to see what happens next.  I'm ready for Friday to arrive!

Since I finished Part 3 on Saturday; I spent most of Sunday finishing up my last UFO project for 2013.  Kingsford Kove came out very nice.  It was quick and easy to put together.  The week is now free to get Kilowatts finished.  Have you started to think of what you will work on in 2014?  I have a list started...

I will be linking up with others at Patchwork Times and Quiltville.  Enjoy your week.

Sunday Stash Report, December 15, 2013

Kingsford Kove
56.5" x 68"
I have a finish to report.  I have been working on several projects at the same time which is unusual for me.  This one is my December 2013 UFO.  It is the last one of the year to complete.  I used up only stash for Kingsford Kove.  I really like how it turned out.  If you would like information on the pattern you can go here.  So for today:

Used this week:   10 yards
Used YTD:  340.75 yards
Purchased this week:  0 yards
Purchased YTD:  120.25 yards
Net Fabric Used in 2013:  220.5 yards

There are more quilters using their stash.  Check them out at Patchwork Times.

Saturday, December 14, 2013

Yesterday when I got home from work Part 3 was cut.  There are 200 sets of the yellow and orange fabrics.  I will be making HSTs.  I used the Easy Angle ruler to cut the triangle from 2" strips.  At this point I have half of them sewn together.  Second half a bit later will find its way through my sewing machine.
I also put the next round of pieces on Kilowatts.  The setting triangles were ready for black strips on three sides and the blocks were ready for white strips on four sides.  The photo shows what they looked like before being trimmed up for the new round.

Hope you are doing something fun today.  The weather here is warmer today than it has been the first part of the week.  Happy Saturday!

Design Wall Monday, December 9, 2013

Happy Monday Quilting Friends!  I have a bunch of projects that I'm trying to juggle right now.  Glad that you have stopped by to see what makes me smile...
Kilowatts
Kilowatts is moving right along.  I spent most of this weekend working on Bonnie Hunter's 2013 Mystery, but I did make time for four rounds on Block A (the last 12) and three rounds on Block B (the last 6).  Mom sent me a few more fabrics that I incorporated and I'm hoping to stop by Rosie's Calico Cupboard to see if they carry and black/white Western theme fabrics.

Kingsford Kove

Kingsford Kove was my second priority these last three days.  I have all the pieces ready to assemble into blocks.  The pattern calls for one solid border, but I'm thinking a solid black inner border might set it off nicely and finish with one of the two black fabrics above.  The remaining fabrics will be cut into strips for a scrappy binding.  Kingsford Kove is my 2013 December UFO.  This has been a terrific year for starting and finishing 13 projects with Aunt Marti's Thirteen in '13 UFO Challenge.  I have been working on my 2014 List already.  Aunt Marti will be featuring this group project next year.  If you are interested check out www.52Quilts.com.  Aunt Marti will welcome you eagerly.
For turning in my 2013 November UFO I was entered to win a fabulous prize from Aunt Marti!  This is what came in the mail on Saturday.  I am short on reproduction fabrics and these will compliment my stash perfectly.  Then there are the Thangles to try out sometime.  I have heard lots of quilters use them with great results.
Last, but first and foremost is Part 2 finished.  I enjoyed making all 100 of these happy looking chevron units. How do you think Part 1 and 2 will play together?  We've already gotten to use all the colors in just the first two clues.  I wonder if the floor tiles in the instructions of Part 2 is a hint...  I am all set for Part 3.
I have a busy week ahead.  Tonight I will be preparing my contribution for Sunshine Quilt Guild's Pot Luck.  I'm to make a main dish.  I'm thinking something vegetarian...we shall see.  We meet on Tuesday where an auction will take place too.  Thursday night I will be cooking again for a work holiday lunch.  When I get home I will be pulling from the blue basket with Part 3 instructions in hand.  Have a great week and stay warm everyone.

Sunday Stash Report, December 8, 2013

Sure wish I had something to change my stats from last week, but can't say that I do.  I finished Part 2 of Bonnie Hunter's 2013 Mystery, Celtic Solstices.  I'll be linking up with Bonnie's site on Monday.  I like how these chevrons look.  Excited to know how they will fit into the project she has us all wondering about.
Tuesday night is Sunshine Quilt Guild's monthly meeting.  We'll be having a pot luck and the biyearly auction.  The bear paw blocks are my entry into the BOM.  The Easy Angle Ruler was used to make the HSTs.  The background on the left was provided by Janet and the background on the right is from my stash.  All "paws" are to be from Fall colors.

Continuing to work on Kilowatts; the commissioned black/white pineapple quilt. Also working my 2013 December UFO, Kingsford Kove.  These two will be moved to the used category before 2013 is out!

So for this week here are my stats:

Used this week:   0 yards
Used YTD:  330.75 yards
Purchased this week:  0 yards
Purchased YTD:  120.25 yards
Net Fabric Used in 2013:  210.5 yards

There are more quilters using their stash.  Check them out at Patchwork Times.

Saturday, December 7, 2013

I got these done yesterday evening.  I will be cutting more blacks later today.  Kingsford Kove is moving along.
This is how my morning started with Part 2 of Bonnie Hunter's Mystery.  It is lunchtime now and I have all pieces assembled into the Chevron units.  I am pressing...

It is raining here in San Diego!

Friday, December 6, 2013

I have my sewing assignments all set for this weekend.  I have off today, the first three day weekend of December for me.  I look forward to these three day weekends!  Part 2 of Bonnie Hunter's 2013 Mystery Celtic Solstice is out.  I printed out the instructions and will get into my fabrics today after I clear up the other projects on my sewing table.  Above photo is the fabrics I have selected for my December 2013 UFO.  After consideration I have decided on Kingsford Kove for my project's name.  It is from the pattern Rustic Meadows by Alex Capadalis Dupre from the periodical Quick and Easy Quilting October 2000.  I have started cutting the pieces that will be needed.  The design is 6" squares and 3" half square triangles.  One of the fabrics that is 3/4 yard will be used for the border.  I am thinking right now to use a scrappy binding so I can continue to de-stash!

I still have black/white and white/black fabrics all over my sewing table.  My Mom sent me some she had in her stash that will work in well, but I think I have enough to get through to the end of this project.  May look for a Western black/white to add in as this quilt (Kilowatts) goes to Texas.  I have also decided to use a white on white print for the back with white thread for a quilting pattern that will look like a whole cloth quilt.  I will share a photo of Kilowatts when I have progress to show.
Kristmas Kollage is finished now.  Just in time for the Holidays.  Well friends I am off to sew!  Enjoy your Friday...

Design Wall Monday, December 2, 2013

Here we are the first days of December 2013.  This year has truly flown by.  I have been kept busy with my sewing projects all year long through 52 Quilts, 13 in 2013 UFO Challenge plus a few others.  Now into the final month's UFO #10.
Either Kades Kove or Kingsford...
I will be working on emptying out the most packed of my stash tote containers, the blacks and grays.  My project is called Rustic Meadows; a design by Alex Capadalis Dupre that was featured in the Quick and Easy Quilting Magazine's October 2000 issue.  Yep, this is a project that I have been wanting to make for quite some time.  My photo is not the best; it was bleary to start with and honestly my version in blacks, grays and creams will not look anything the same.  My hairdresser suggested Kingsford for a future black quilt and I am liking that name better than Kades Kove at the moment.  We shall see what happens as my project is put together.
Celtic Solstices Part 1 (yet to be named)
I have linked up with Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville blog today to show my progress on Part 1 of her current Mystery Celtic Solstices.  I will be making the smaller version.  My colors are as she suggests.  I like the combination and do not remember making one with them all in one project.  Green and Yellow are the other colors that will make up the project.  A name is not decided for my quilt yet.  Keltic Kosmos has been suggested so far.  In keeping with the first name being a "K"...what do you suggest?

Kilowatts
Lots more time to be spent on Kilowatts yet.  Between my December 2013 UFO and Bonnie's Mystery I plan to work on it.  I hope to have it done before the year is out.  I have 12 more Block As and 10 more Block Bs to complete.

There are lots more projects in the work around the globe check out some of them through the links at Patchwork Times and Quiltville.

Sunday Stash Report, December 1, 2013

As I write this post I am continuing to work on Celtic Solstices Part 1.  This photo shows 60 neutral/blue triangle squares assembled with 36 yet to go.  I also have 20 orange/blue triangle squares assembled and 72 yet to go.  I'm trying to cut into my scraps as minimal as possible, but still keeping a lot of variety.  This is part of the reason to cut and sew as I have done.  I see no reason not to be able to finish part one by Monday so that I can post to Bonnie's blog.  I haven't come up with a name for my Celtic Solstices project...I'd be happy to have you help me.  Remember the challenge to name with the first letter being a "K".
I did make a purchase yesterday at Beverly's.  I brought home fabrics for three projects; Celtic Solstices, Kilowatts and Kristmas Kollage.  I am just barley keeping above 200 yards used this year.  Kilowatts should be finished before the year is out and I will also have my December UFO complete.  (The UFO Parade at 52 Quilts is tomorrow for all the November UFO finishes.)  Not sure anything else will be completed.  As long as I can stay away from any must have fabrics during the holiday sales I should be good.

So for this week here are my stats:

Used this week:   0 yards
Used YTD:  330.75 yards
Purchased this week:  3.75 yards
Purchased YTD:  120.25 yards
Net Fabric Used in 2013:  210.5 yards

There are more quilters using their stash.  Check them out at Patchwork Times.

Friday, November 29, 2013

I am excited to get going on Bonnie Hunter's Mystery today.  I did a little bit of cutting and will get to assembling tomorrow morning.

I first finished up the four started Block As of Kilowatts.  There are 50 to make total for the queen size and I have another 12 to go.  Today I stopped by Beverly's to pick up another six black/white and white/black prints.  Must keep the variety going.

I also picked up a solid red fabric for the binding of Kristmas Kollage.  I wanted to get the binding on for Sunday's football games with DH.  Don't you just love the quilting?

There will be more to share tomorrow as I get my Phaff humming on Part 1.  Hope you enjoyed your Friday.

Happy Thanksgiving

I have our contribution for today's feast finished.  Made a cranberry pomegranate terrine and a great banana cake.  Ingredients for the 7-Up rolls are gathered.  Champagne and cranberry juice are being chilled.  We'll be celebrating with friends today.  Anxious to see how the turkey is going to be prepared and what other wonderful dishes await.  I have a list of Thanksgiving Holiday trivia to share during our meal.

Hope that your weather is cooperating, especially if you are traveling.  Have a wonderful day!

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

The clock is ticking to have fabrics ready...  The 29th is just days away now!
