I've got Kooky Kins complete.  I just adore these Buggy Barn designs.  Those two sisters know what they are doing!  This is the second time making their Crazy Jack's design.  The first one was made in a workshop at Amidon's.  It was finished by Kerry and I and raffled off as a Sunshine Quilt Guild Opportunity Quilt a couple of years ago.  Needless to say that I had to have one of my own so that's just what I did.  I think the candy corn border just makes these silly pumpkins just jump right out at you.  You will also be delightfully surprised to see the variegated yellow/orange candy corn quilting pattern.  Thanks to Kerry's son-in-law for coming up with the clever name.

Kommon Kongregation Backgrounds and Setting Triangle Fabrics (new center and right)

I'm deep at work on Kommon Kongregation at present.  Aunt Marti of 52Quilts might have a purple for me to use as one of the stars.  I spotted the fabric from a photo of a block in a quilt she made recently.  (Check out her quilt if you have time; it's theme is Colorado.)  I've been looking for an eggplant purple reproduction fabric with little luck in the shops around my area.  My Mom of Sew What Else! has some grays that I might be able to use for the remaining backgrounds on their way to me.  I did pick up three at Cozy Quilt Shop on Thursday along with a solid more taupe than gray for the setting triangles.  This is my purchase for the week. I still might need Bonnie's help on more gray backgrounds with a stop by her LQS, Temecula Quilt Company.  It's great to have the help!  Kommon Kongregation is a Marti Michell design called Seven Sister's Simplified.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  I'd forgotten until just hours ago that I'd never taken Patrick out of the closet to help us celebrate this day.  Hope you have a lucky day.  I'm planning on something Irish for dinner...just what is yet to be discovered!

Khambray is done.  I was able to finish it yesterday and it's now in Kerry's Quilting queue.  I found a little trouble with Cathy Wiersbicki's pattern when it came to the outside border.  I found the top and bottom didn't need the 3" cut from each end as directed and the side borders were about 7" short.  I checked all my seams and everything measured right.  Fortunately I had enough scrappy fabrics left to make it all work.  Teal YLI thread is planned, a goldish black for Sew Batik, and a feathery looking quilting pattern called Exquisite will be used.  I've got a stripe in teal and gold that will be used for the binding when the time comes.  So today I have yardage to input to the "USED" statistic!

 I've also got lots of binding to do.  These three are all at the half binding stage awaiting their turn.  Do you recognize any of them?  I'll share a full frontal when their finished.

These are the last three Ornaments to be finished.  Kerry quilted them up yesterday.  I plan red binding for each of them.

Khambray

Time to assemble!  I can see that used fabrics stat changing on Sunday!  I've finished all the units now.  Taken the time this morning to mix up the blocks nicely.  Now it's time to sew the blocks together and put the borders on.

I've got three small quilts completely done.  Kerry quilted them up for me last week.  First up is Koppice that was a 2012 UFO completed on time but hadn't been quilted.  I thought about trying to quilt it myself, but why when Kerry's Quilting does such a fantastic job.  Koppice is from a pattern I picked up at Temecula Quilt Co in Temecula, CA.  It's from A Collection of Small Red and White Quilts.

Next Kadette was completed.  Natural thread was used and the pattern changed for each block, but they were all on the same batting and back making the quilting just a bit quicker.  Kadette was a 2013 UFO.  Its from a pattern called United We Stand by Mary Herschleb Designs.  I enjoyed the tiny paper pieced pieces.  There will be another one to make in the future as promised.

Last but not least, a Christmas Gift for someone special made well ahead of time.  I've got three others in different colors done ready for Kerry's Quilting.  The pattern is by Quilt-Pro Systems.  It was their Block of The Day on December 5, 2012.  It was designed as a paper pieced 4" square pattern that I enlarged.  It should make a nice decoration for a small space.

I've got three other larger projects in the binding queue.  You'll be seeing No Klucks Here Either!, Kooky Kins, and Krabapple in the next few days.  Kerry's also suggested that the next three ornament blocks can be done tomorrow while we are sewing together for the day.

I'm off to Bits and Pieces where they are holding the newest Buggy Barn book for me.  They ordered six and got them in just yesterday...all are already spoken for!  I'll be needing mine for a workshop I'll be taking on May 4th.  We'll be doing When the Cows Come Home which is the feature design in the new book.

Knoted


Let me start with my final 2012 UFO completed.  I'm two months ahead of the challenge.  Being ahead let's me get a few others done before 2013 challenges commence!  Knoted is a Judy Laquidara design FREE on her website called Note to Self.  Knoted has that silent "K" when pronounced.  I stopped mine after the third border with the plan to bind it in the dark black/brown which would have been the next border following Judy's design.  Although I like how I can use more stash with a larger project I prefer something a bit smaller.  Knoted finishes 67 1/2" x 80".

Kooky Kins

I finished Kooky Kins this past Monday.  Kooky Kins is a Buggy Barn design called Crazy Jacks.  It can be found in their book Frightfully Crazy.  Kooky Kins is also a 2012 UFO that has yet to be selected.

A third finish this week is Lori Smith's design that I'll call 4 Stars from her Quilt Squares #6 pattern.  This block is October's Quilt Square Quilt Along block selected by Jo's Country Junction.  I'd make these ahead too but it isn't known which design is next until the first of each month.  I'll claim yardage on all 12 blocks that I do in 2012 when I put the project together into a sampler quilt around the first of 2013.

I did add a bit to my stash this week; purchasing fabrics for my Road to California Mystery class that I'll be taking in January 2013 and eight 1/2 yard pieces for a 2013 UFO that I've got on my radar where I will need a bunch of neutrals.  These fabrics won't collect dust!  I am quite pleased with my numbers this week!

Design Wall Monday, October 22, 2012

I have another 2012 UFO done ahead of schedule.  This is Kooky Kins a design by Buggy Barn called Crazy Jacks.  The pattern can be found in the Frightfully Crazy book.  This is the second time to make it.  I had to have one of my own.  Used up a lot of my purple stash and the bright oranges took a hit too...yeah for using the stash.

Here's Kooky Kins back.  There are a lot of my favorite purples in this back.  The squares are 11".

This is my October quilt block with Jo's Country Junction.  Jo has been coordinating a block a month from Lori Smith's Quilt Squares designs.  This is one from her #6 pattern.  I selected four different colors for the stars.  Creams for the background.  The browns for the sashing corner stones.  The darker cream for the sashing.  Finally the borders.  I have the pieces cut now and will be sewing this project next.

Sunday Stash Report, October 21, 2012

I went to Rosie's to use my Birthday gift and....  Came home with the two large pieces that you see above.  The "batiks", neutral and dark, are for the black and white parts that you see in the instructions.  I'll use my scraps for the color.  This will be a very scrappy quilt.  It is the last 2012 UFO to make.  The pattern is Judy's called Note to Self available free on her website.  I'll be calling my quilt Knoted.

I also met Chris who is participating in the Neutral Block Swap that I'm coordinating with 18 others.  Chris is new to the swaps that I've been coordinating.  Nice to see timing of turn in won't be a problem with Chris...she's first to turn in...the deadline is the end of January 2013.  Way to go Chris.

I hope to have Kooky Kins done for next week, but for now there's Knoted fabrics to count in.  Here are my stats for this report:

I've finished piecig the candy corn border sections.  Next is sewing each of the sections together.  I'll measure out what's needed for the sides and top of the jacks center, but first I'll need to get the jacks ready.

Trimming the jacks down to 12.5 x 14.5 now.  I remember from the workshop that there isn't much stem so I won't be taking too much off the top.  I found in the workshop and this second time of making the Crazy Jacks pattern that there is about 1" or more around the sides extra to work with. 

My first two are done with seven more to go.  That's my morning so far.  I should be able to get the rest of the jacks trimmed and the jacks put together.  I'll have the candy corn border on in no time.

Right now it's off to Rosie's to use my Birthday Discount before the month is out. I will find something fun; thanks Rosie!  I may be able to catch Chris B while there.  Chris is already finished with her Neutral Block Swap blocks.

This is Kooky Kins candy corn border.  There are 14 layers of fabric that are assembled alternating with a purple then a yellow/orange/white strip set then purple again and then white/orange/yellow, repeat.  Each layer is 5" wide by 21" long.  It's real good to use the 60mm rotary cutter for Buggy Barn projects since you cut lots of layers at once.

Moving right along on Kooky Kins.  Looks like I'll need to move some of these Jacks around to mix up the colors a bit more.  I'm looking at both the Jack colors as well as the background.  Next to sew is the cute Candy Corn pieced border.  First part is making white, orange, and yellow strip sets.  Look for progress tomorrow.

Design Wall Monday, October 15, 2012

Kooky Kins is on my wall today.  This is one of the last two 2012 UFOs I have to complete.  There will be nine pumpkins with a pieced candy corn border.  The pattern is from The Buggy Barn in the Frightfully Crazy book called Crazy Jacks.

This will be the second time I made this project.  The first was a fundraiser for Sunshine Quilt Guild.  Kooky Kins will be for me.

With the neutral scraps that I had right at hand, half are finished.  I used the leftover trimmings for 9-patches.  The string blocks are for a swap that I'm coordinating that finishes in January 2013.  The 9-patches don't have a project but the will get used for some day.

Tonight is Canyon Quilt Guild with David Taylor.  I'll be rushing home for Dancing With The Stars.  It has been a great season so far.  Wonder who will go home this week.

2012 UFO Challenges, December 20, 2011

Here are my 2012 UFO Challenges:

#1 Kokonut No!  This is a pattern called Sunshine Pineapple a Quilting Time Pattern 103.  I've been wanting to make this one for years...since 2007 when I purchased the pattern.  2012 is it's year!

#2 Kamile.  This pattern is called Perennial Petals from Quiltmaker Magazine Issue Mar/Apr 2011 by Caroline Reardon.  I've started this one only through copying the pattern for the paper piecing technique that will be used to assemble it.  Should be easy to grab from my stash.

#3 Klowning.  Bonnie Hunter's Little Monkey design that was offered on her blog last year.  I'm still not completely sold with this name.  It will use up a lot of stash which is famous for Bonnie's designs.

#4 Knoted.  Judy Laquardia design called Note to Self.  This one caught my attention.  Looks like a simple design, but has a bunch of character.  I'm all about using up my stash and this one will be good for it too!

#5 Kontinuum.  Judy Laquardia design called Connect the Dots.  I love Judy's borders.  She's so clever in her designs.  You'll be noticing that I've got lots of her designs in my UFO list for 2012.

#6 Kaktus.  Design called Prickly Pear that was in Quilters News Magazine in June 1997 by Terri Lynn Ballard.  Yep this one is a pattern I've been thinking about for a long time.  It has lots of pieces but again notice the trend USE STASH!

#7 Klappers.  Judy Laquardia design called Jazzy Nights that was offered in Quiltmaker Magazine Issue Sep/Oct 2010.  The name is funny don't you think?  Can't wait to get to this one...again a stash buster for me...except the Kona black fabric that I'll be needing.  Love that Kona black!

#8 Kollinwood Konnections.  Judy Laquardia design called Road to Brownwood that was offered on her blog last year.  Collinwood happens to be the street that my parents live on.  Just a simple change of letters.  I'd say I have connections to Collinwood wouldn't you? 

#9 Kooky Kins.  A Buggy Barn pattern called Crazy Jacks.  This will be the second project from this pattern.  This one will be for me.  I've already got most of the fabrics set aside.  If you've never tried one of the Buggy Barn patterns I suggest them.  Very whimsical designs and a totally different approach to putting the pieces together!

#10 Kommodore.  A Judy Laquardia design called Indigo that was offered on her blog last year.  Everyone feel in love with this project that Judy offers free on her blog.  It was for her Monochromatic Challenge when the color was Indigo that month.  I'm not sure I have enough of these colors, but it's fabulous in these blue purple tones.  You may wonder what Kommodore has to do with Indigo...well commodore happens to be the color to the left of indigo in Sherwin Williams palate of colors LOL!  I just may be raiding my Mom and Kerry's stash...watch out you two!

#11 Klunky Korners.  I've had two suggestions on a name for this project; Kat in the Korner and Klunky Korners...  A Bonnie Hunter design that I'm coordinating in a block swap with 15 others.  The swap blocks are due 2/29/12.  Joan and Collette are already finished with their swap blocks.  Mom and I cut out pieces when I was visiting during Thanksgiving 2011.  Our swappers are in southern Maryland and the San Diego, Ca area.

#12 Koppice.  A pattern from the Temecula Quilt Co called A Tree of Life.  This one is tiny at 11" x 13".  The month this is selected will be an easy month.

I'm also going to work at getting done what was on the 2011 UFO list that didn't get finished.  Koda's Keeper, Kartwheels, Komplicated, Kaskade, Kurry, Krossfire, and Koriander Kompass.  Yes I'm not happy that I didn't get these done; I'm not the type to set goals without results.  A 30% success just isn't what it should be!

We've got a finish!  Kerry and I managed to beat the clock once again.  We finished the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA 25th Annual Fur Ball Fundraiser just today.   We call it Dancing With The Dogs which is the theme of this year's event that is being held on Saturday, August 20th.   

This was Saturday at Kerry's sewing studio.  She's busy chatting with her Mom and quilting Dancing With The Dogs.  Yes, we both are multifunctional kinda gals! 

The next couple of pictures are close ups.  We were a bit worried that this great stripe scrap (just perfect for this quilt) wouldn't be enough to get all the way around if we cut it on the bias.  We wanted the stripes moving to further the look of Snoopy dancing. Yeah, it did with 10" of binding left over.  We know how to calculate strips and the resulting yardage, but how do you do it when you cut on the bias?  (We just kept our fingers crossed--wink!)  The selvages were cut away, but 99.9% sure this cute dog theme fabric is by Michael Miller.  This fabric just makes me smile.

Kerry and I split the yardage for Dancing With The Dogs since we both used our stash for it.  My two purchases were at Amidon Quiltworks; 1/2 yard to finish up Kalm and the other 1 1/2 yards for Kooky Kins.  Both fabrics have already been used, but not quite ready to claim in my report...soon though!

I participated in a workshop last night...one of those unexpected ones (wink)...that was real fun.  In the past several years I've purchased three different Buggy Barn patterns.  Crazy Dog Days, That Crazy Thing We Do, and Frightfully Crazy.  The designs are just too cute!  Last year I got the Frightfully Crazy Pattern Book and even started collecting some oranges for the nine pumpkins in the cover design. 

Needless to say the three patterns Crazy Jacks, Crazy Cats, and Crazy as a Bird Dog haven't made it to the top of my to do list...although they've been not too far from my thoughts.  Every time I visit Amidon Quiltworks their Buggy Barn Club speaks to me to join.

I went to Amidon's on Monday and I kept on hearing "join me, join me" as I glanced at the information posted about it while having what I went there for cut.  The Club meets the first Thursday of the month and you work on any Buggy Barn pattern while being surrounded by other Buggy Barn enthusiasts.  I've been concerned about the commitment part of the Club, but know without a doubt I'd enjoy myself every time and I'd be getting the three projects done.  So I brought up my desires and of course was encouraged by the staff...then when they learned why I was reluctant (the commitment part) they said "well that design Crazy Cats is a two part workshop in September; very little commitment with that".  They were right and I signed up for the workshop.  Then while they still had my complete attention it was pointed out that behind me was another design also Buggy Barn (Crazy Jacks) with the class held on Thursday.  So I ended up enrolling  in both workshops!  What's great is the educated talent of Julanne Bergstrom who has some connections with the Buggy Barn Quilt Shop leading the way. 

We first prepared our fabrics with iron and starch.  Stacked our fabrics, ironed on our freezer paper template and began cutting out the pieces.  First with the frame parts (purple), then stack, iron freezer paper template pumpkin parts (orange), and finally stack, iron freezer paper template eyes, nose, and mouth (gold).  I had three Jacks assembled by the end of the four hour workshop.  


Julanne went over the Candy Corn border, but that is to be done after all the pumpkins are finished.  Since the Candy Corn assembly is a bit tricky those not familiar with Buggy Barn patterns were invited to come back to one of the "Club" evenings if we needed help.  I think I may have it figured out, but will work on it before September 1st to make sure I don't need more guidance.


So now there is a plan to get two of the three Buggy Barn projects complete.  Julanne says that the Crazy as a Bird Dog pattern is a workshop she'll be doing in 2012.  Of course that means I'll be signing up!


Best of all making Crazy Jacks used my stash all except one purple FQ (Buggy Barn Patterns are designed for FQs).  Just love to use up that stash!


Tomorrow I'll be busy with Kerry finishing the San Diego Humane Society's 25th Annual Fur Ball Fundraiser quilt "Dancing with the Dogs".  You remember the one with Snoopy Dancing.  Pictures on Sunday!
