Kaktus

Its back to working on Kaktus for me this weekend.  I spent the first part of the week with hand sewing the binding, sleeve and label on Kommodore.  Kaktus has 15 more blocks to assemble before all the components are finished.  I'm all set to stitch them today.  Perhaps before the day is out the rows will start coming together.  Janet...if I'd had five more blocks to put together I'd have run out of darks!

I'll be working on Kaktus this week.  I'm at the point where sewing the blocks together starts.  I can't begin to say how glad I am that I started this UFO before it was called.  I have all the monthly challenges for August finished.  Time to work on a few other things that aren't yet on a challenge list!

This is Kommodore.  I got it back over the weekend from Kerry's Quilting.  I'll try to get a photograph of the quilting on this beauty when I have the binding down.  I know lots don't like the binding part, but its one of my favorite parts.

I'm anxious to see where I ended up with Kordova Klosure in this week's theme Scrappy Quilts with the Quilt Gallery.  There's a button on my side bar if you want to check things out.  This is a fun weekly contest.  I wonder if I'll have anything that will fit next week's theme?

Today is my first of four scheduled physical therapy appointments.  I'm still hurting from my sciatic flare up.  I'm sure hoping for some magic!  I've been slowing getting better; this has been going on since the middle of July...enough!

Sunday Stash Report, August 19, 2012

August 2012 UFO DONE!  I'm happy to say Klappers is finished.  Klappers is a Judy Laquidara pattern called Jazzy Nights that was featured in Quiltmaker September/October 2010 issue.  It is a combination of piecing, wonky cuts and foundation piecing.  The variety of techniques made it fun to put together.  I would have liked to have seen a finished drawing of the entire quilt printed as the orientation of the pieced border tricked me a bit.  Notice how the top and right have the HSTs with the light on the inside and the right and bottom have the dark on the inside.  I also found the blocks to be easier sewn as a 12 patch rather than the way it was suggested.  All said and done Klappers looks great!

Sunday Stash Report, April 29, 2012

My April UFO is complete.  This is Kommodore designed by Judy Laquidara; her Indigo.  Judy has it offered for free on her website if you want one of your very own.  I didn't put the last border on to keep it a bit smaller.  I'll follow her idea with the coloring and use the red violet or the medium purple for the binding.  The fabric below came from Kerry's stash.  It looks a bit pink here but it does work well so I'm planning on using it.  In looking through the stash of quilting threads a variegated green looked like it might be a winner for the quilting.  Bring on May's UFO!

Let me introduce you to Kruizer!  I was so excited to have him complete during the class.  He's got silver paw print buttons holding up his britches.  There were ten of us in the class which made for a full house in the cozy class space at Country Loft in La Mesa, CA.  Several were working on other dolls during the day.  That's a nice thing about JoAnn the instructor.  She makes it so easy to make one of her dolls.

It's still early yet in San Diego giving me plenty of time to complete Quilt Square #4 of Lori Smith's design from Quilt Square Pattern #1.  This project is also a monthly one that needs to be done before tomorrow is out.  If you want to join in on the fun of the Quilt Square Quilt Along check out Jo's Country Junction to see what everyone else creates.

So my stash report is pretty good today.  I've got the fabric to count for Kommodore and thanks to Kerry nothing to report as purchased!

Here's Kommodore so far.  I've got it up on my wall with the usual blue painters tape.  One day I'll make it a real design wall (hubby gave me the green light!).  I still have a bit of rearranging to do with the blocks before I sew them together.  The green is the first border that is all one fabric instead of making it scrappy.  I thought it would calm the middle a bit before the scrappy pieced border.  I'll be finishing it off with the binding in a medium purple; probably again with one fabric.  I don't have enough of any of the fabrics I have left in this shade so it will probably be a purchase...unless one of my friends has something they want to rid from their stash :)!

The pieced blocks on the top are the way the project is designed, but I like the green together around the corner like the layout below.  Any opinions?

Tomorrow is the last working day of the week for me.  I have a class on Friday at Country Loft where I'll be making another cat doll.  Korabell and her three kitties are still meowing to be finished...but you know a class for a project you want to make doesn't come around all the time...

Design Wall Monday, April 23, 2012

Here's my sewing room today.  I have Kommodore (Judy Laquidara's design Indigo) in various stages of completion.  I'm working on all the components and then the blocks will go together.  Thanks on all the comments about color to use for that center square.  I didn't have any other pinks to audition that looked "less intense" as many of you suggested I try.  This one will work and better yet it is stash to use!  It should be pretty quick to get it done now.  The end of the month is fast approaching.  I've also got my fourth Quilt Square with Jo's Country Junctions (Lori Smith's designs from Quilt Squares #1).  I'm going to be busy this week!

I'm continuing to work on my April UFO.  I have just a bunch of components so I didn't bother with a photo for this post.  I do have a little eye candy to share...this is Joan's Chunky Churndashes quilt.  She used green and brown with a contrasting corner stone in the inner border.  Her hour glasses look to be a brown on the gold side.  Nice work Joan!

My background fabric arrived and you know I've been steady working on Kommodore.  It came from Keepsake Quilting and raises my purchases for just about a week.  What I don't end up using in the quilt's top will be put to use on the back.  Anxious for this one to be done.  Here's my report:

Looking for a little help with colors.  Which do you like best for my Kommodore?  The first four are variations of Block A.  I've changed the centers in each block.  I didn't have time to create the corner blocks with the medium purple as the HST.  I'd be using the same dark purple in the corners.  I wouldn't use the medium purple as the center block in this version. At least that's what I've got in mind.  Looking for your ideas...

These next photos are of HSTs without the dark corner square.  These first four are green with the different center colors as in the Block A above.

These next photos are of HSTs without the dark corner square. These next three are medium purple with the different center colors.  I wouldn't use the medium purple with a medium purple center...

There are two other blocks that are variations of Block A with quantity of the corner patch (with the square) not being in each corner.  The Block D which I've not shown is the dark purple and either the medium purple or green 2" square in it's center.  I hope the samples are enough for you to help me decide.

Design Wall Monday, April 16, 2012

Nothing up on the wall, but I've got main fabrics figured out for the fourth Quilt Square Quilt Along block for April.  Jo had us select any other design we wanted in Lori Smith's Quilt Squares #1 pattern.  I'm not certain I'll have enough variety in my stash of each color selected for the nine units.  Notice that the HSTs are all different in each of the units.  I'll be digging into my stash a bit more or maybe just make the HSTs for each color the same.  That is each of the nine units being only two fabrics.  Yeah sounds a bit boring... 

The background fabric for my April UFO with Patchwork Times is enroute from Keepsake Quilting.  Once it arrives I'll be racing to get Kommodore done before the end of the month.  Its Judy's Indigo design free on her website.

Design Wall Monday, April 9, 2012

Back to the work week.  The weather sure has been wonderful which makes it hard to spend 9 hour days indoors :(!  I've got two things scheduled this week one is the dentist for a cleaning (not too bad) and the other is the April Sunshine Monthly Meeting. 

This month we made a pretty block for the BOM.  Done in purple, white, and a supplied yellow.  It's called a butterfly block.  I suppose the four patches on point are the butterflies.  I'm anxious to see all the other purples being used.

I'm continuing on Autumn Rush.  I've got seven more pink blocks to assemble.  There is a white pieced inner border, the piecing will be with more gray/white HSTs.  It appears that I got a little carried away making pink/white and teal/white HSTs...of well there is always another project that will use them.

I'll be checking my mail for a package from Keepsake Quilting this week as I'm expecting the background fabric to be delivered for my April UFO (Indigo).  I'll need to get going on this one right away...April is slipping right by.

Design Wall Monday, April 2, 2012

Today starts out with sewing rows together on my third block of Jo's Country Junction's Quilt Square Quilt Along.  I've got the piecing done and like the addition of the blue, teal and red.  I've also brought in more of the green that was in the second block.  Next to decide is what borders I should use.  I'm thinking to stay with browns.  Any ideas on this?  There are six other blocks to make in this quilt along.  I will be putting all these blocks together into a sampler when its done.  These blocks are designed by Lori Smith in her Quilt Squares #1 pattern. 


I'm participating in Judy's 2012 UFO Challenge with Patchwork Times.  #10 was selected for April.  For me it happens to be Indigo, one of her FREE designs that you can get on her website.  I haven't spent time yet figuring out what fabrics I'll use.  Hopefully I'll have enough of what I need already and be able to use up more of my stash :)!

Finally I spent much of the day continuing work on HSTs for Autumn Rush, Myra Mayh's design.  I've been spinning the seams too!  I still have a stack of pink HSTs to sew.  The grays and turquoise HSTs are finished.  Next it will be ironing and squaring up with my trusty Bloc-Loc square up ruler.

No progress on Klunky Korners since yesterday.  It is all still on my design wall held up by blue painters tape...  Find time to see other quilters' projects at Patchwork Times.  Have a wonderful first week of April.

2012 UFO Challenges, December 20, 2011

Here are my 2012 UFO Challenges:

#1 Kokonut No!  This is a pattern called Sunshine Pineapple a Quilting Time Pattern 103.  I've been wanting to make this one for years...since 2007 when I purchased the pattern.  2012 is it's year!

#2 Kamile.  This pattern is called Perennial Petals from Quiltmaker Magazine Issue Mar/Apr 2011 by Caroline Reardon.  I've started this one only through copying the pattern for the paper piecing technique that will be used to assemble it.  Should be easy to grab from my stash.

#3 Klowning.  Bonnie Hunter's Little Monkey design that was offered on her blog last year.  I'm still not completely sold with this name.  It will use up a lot of stash which is famous for Bonnie's designs.

#4 Knoted.  Judy Laquardia design called Note to Self.  This one caught my attention.  Looks like a simple design, but has a bunch of character.  I'm all about using up my stash and this one will be good for it too!

#5 Kontinuum.  Judy Laquardia design called Connect the Dots.  I love Judy's borders.  She's so clever in her designs.  You'll be noticing that I've got lots of her designs in my UFO list for 2012.

#6 Kaktus.  Design called Prickly Pear that was in Quilters News Magazine in June 1997 by Terri Lynn Ballard.  Yep this one is a pattern I've been thinking about for a long time.  It has lots of pieces but again notice the trend USE STASH!

#7 Klappers.  Judy Laquardia design called Jazzy Nights that was offered in Quiltmaker Magazine Issue Sep/Oct 2010.  The name is funny don't you think?  Can't wait to get to this one...again a stash buster for me...except the Kona black fabric that I'll be needing.  Love that Kona black!

#8 Kollinwood Konnections.  Judy Laquardia design called Road to Brownwood that was offered on her blog last year.  Collinwood happens to be the street that my parents live on.  Just a simple change of letters.  I'd say I have connections to Collinwood wouldn't you? 

#9 Kooky Kins.  A Buggy Barn pattern called Crazy Jacks.  This will be the second project from this pattern.  This one will be for me.  I've already got most of the fabrics set aside.  If you've never tried one of the Buggy Barn patterns I suggest them.  Very whimsical designs and a totally different approach to putting the pieces together!

#10 Kommodore.  A Judy Laquardia design called Indigo that was offered on her blog last year.  Everyone feel in love with this project that Judy offers free on her blog.  It was for her Monochromatic Challenge when the color was Indigo that month.  I'm not sure I have enough of these colors, but it's fabulous in these blue purple tones.  You may wonder what Kommodore has to do with Indigo...well commodore happens to be the color to the left of indigo in Sherwin Williams palate of colors LOL!  I just may be raiding my Mom and Kerry's stash...watch out you two!

#11 Klunky Korners.  I've had two suggestions on a name for this project; Kat in the Korner and Klunky Korners...  A Bonnie Hunter design that I'm coordinating in a block swap with 15 others.  The swap blocks are due 2/29/12.  Joan and Collette are already finished with their swap blocks.  Mom and I cut out pieces when I was visiting during Thanksgiving 2011.  Our swappers are in southern Maryland and the San Diego, Ca area.

#12 Koppice.  A pattern from the Temecula Quilt Co called A Tree of Life.  This one is tiny at 11" x 13".  The month this is selected will be an easy month.

I'm also going to work at getting done what was on the 2011 UFO list that didn't get finished.  Koda's Keeper, Kartwheels, Komplicated, Kaskade, Kurry, Krossfire, and Koriander Kompass.  Yes I'm not happy that I didn't get these done; I'm not the type to set goals without results.  A 30% success just isn't what it should be!
