I finished binding Klowning and Kollinwood Konnections this week.  Kerry liked Klowning so much (Bonnie Hunter's Little Monkey) while she was quilting it that she's started one to use as a gift.  Her's will look so different with the fabrics she will be using.  Kollinwood Konnections (Judy Laquidara's Road to Brownwood) looks has a great circular pattern for the quilting in purple thread.  Next for binding is Kontinental.  I also have several participant labels to sew on the quilts I entered in the San Diego Quilt Show.

Hope your week's been good so far. Several quilting sisters have been making blocks to present to Susan for her big birthday...one of those that end in a zero! Susan likes fairies so we made blocks in four different designs with that theme in mind. We gave her the special gift just yesterday. She was so happy! I don't have the best of photographs, but hopefully she'll share a picture when she has the project assembled. These are the four patterns we used.

Kollinwood Konnections is the first of the three quilts to put binding down. I figured I would start with the largest of the three. I'm on the last long side now. I should be able to finish it tonight. Next to work on will be Klowning. I've got the binding machine stitched down and ready to go.

During all the binding projects I have been thinking about what I'll take to work on at the quilting retreat that starts next week for three days. There are eight of us attending this year. It would be nice to finish a few projects that I have started instead of something new like I usually do. My Bonnie Hunter Crabapple project from the swap just turned in a couple of months ago might be the project or perhaps I'll just get busy on one of the last two UFOs for 2012 with Patchwork Times.

No Klucks Here!

I was busy on Sunday teaching No Klucks Here! at Paradise Quilters in Escondido, CA.  No time for any sewing until way late in the evening. 

Kollinwood Konnections, Kontinental, Klowning

I got the bindings and sleeves all pressed and ready to attach to my newly quilted quilts.  Klowning, Kontinental, and Kollinwood Konnections.  Klowning and Kontinental are both Bonnie Hunter designs (Little Monkey! and Take A Scrappy Trip Around the World!).  Kollinwood Konnections is a Judy Laquidara design (Road to Brownwood).  All of these patterns can be found on their websites.

I didn't get a chance to go this year to the San Diego Quilt Show that happened this past weekend.  I heard good things about the new format and the volunteers organizing the event.  I had five quilts displayed.  Kerry went to Preview Night and took photos for me of my entries.

I did have a completion in Korabell and her three Kitties over the weekend.  Hope to work on my class sample of No Klucks Here! this week along with hand sewing the bindings.  It is sure to be a busy sewing week.

Tonight is Canyon Quilt Guild's September Meeting.  Harriet Hargrave is our speaker who will show us a trunk show of her wonder machine quilting.

Korabell with her kitties Krissy, Kitty and Karl are done!  I decided this weekend to get this very cute cat doll done.  She's been sitting waiting in a dark box for nearly two years now.  I took this class at Country Loft on my Birthday in 2010.  Gosh time does fly!

Saturday I picked up three quilts at Kerry's Quilting.  I have the bindings started on all three.  Next is the iron and the sewing.  I'll share more information on these three projects tomorrow.  Now it's off to Quilters Paradise where I have a class to teach!

Rosie's Calico Cupboard

After looking everywhere for the black and white check I could have saved myself by a visit to Rosie's to start.  Not just one but two different 1/4" checks to choose from so I got both.  I also purchased enough of each to last me for another project or two in the future.  I used the check on the bottom of the stack.  I also found a good neutral multi colored confetti piece that will come in handy soon for another of my remaining 2012 UFOs.  The dog bone piece will do well to add to the San Diego Humane Society quilt that Kerry and I will donate this year.

I also got my prize this past week during a visit with Mary.  Turns out I sold the most Sunshine Opportunity Quilt tickets this year.  The "leftovers" made a great wall hanging that I'm happy to have.  The fall theme I decorate my home with is scarecrows; this scarecrow will fit right in.

This week I did make yet another purchase, but unlike last week I've got usage to record.  Kontinental and Klowning were both finished along with the Hot Air Balloon top for my Mom.

Klowning

I have my July UFO Challenge complete.  I hadn't originally planned to use the outer border fabric as I did.  I purchased this way out fabric with the crazy zigzag running all through it in all the colors of the center blocks.  I thought I might cut it the length of the fabric to present all the colors on every side.  Then I stumbled on the look of it if I'd cut it on the width of the fabric instead.  Having the purple nearest the purple corner squares in the sashing really looks striking in my opinion.  The slight touch of yellow in the outside also adds a little punch.  I did loose most of the pink using the zigzag as I did.  Thought I'd use the black multi dot for a binding, but now I'm leaning towards more yellow.  Auditions will come after it's quilted.  This pattern is called Little Monkey by Bonnie Hunter and can be found FREE on her website.

I was busy yesterday putting the finishing touches on these two projects.  First up is the Hot Air Balloon top that is my Mom's.  The blocks came from a swap she participated in a couple of years back.  I don't know if the others who swapped found it has hard to find a fabric to sash the blocks with that would go along with all the different blue backgrounds that perplexed us.  Once the decision was made to go for the black and white 1/4" check...it had to be found.  Finding what you'd think to be a "staple" sort of fabric didn't turn out that way at all.  Finally found though and ready for quilting.  I found putting the white with black dots in the corners gave it a a bit of a punch too.  Three more blocks are left which will find their way onto the back.

Over the course of the week I finished all 20 blocks, decided on an arrangement and then started assembly.  Blue is a pleasing color for both gals and girls so navy became the inner border and scraps from a 2005 quilt were enough for the second border.  I'm still working on a back for this project that I'm calling Kontinental.  It is a pattern by Bonnie Hunter that is offered FREE on her website called Scrappy Trips Around The World.

 It was real nice having yesterday to sew.  Since I'm a bit ahead on my UFOs the sewing has been on getting a few projects without due dates done before I have to put them on a list!  Tomorrow is an off day for me.  I have Klowning on my sewing table with one more border to attach before it can be called complete.  Klowning is my July UFO Challenge with Patchwork Times.  Maybe I'll work on Korabell and her kitties next...

On Monday I went to Amidon Quiltworks in Poway.  Sadly they will be closing their store front mid July.  Nancy wants to try something different.  The plan is to sell what remains of the fabrics online or on the road as she travels with the "show circuit".  All of these fabrics should find homes this year.  The ones on the left are neutrals for a UFO with Judy that hasn't yet been selected.  The group in the middle will each go to different projects two not yet started and the other I'll use as a back for Knickels.  The largest stack on the right are for backs mostly with the two smaller pieces just because I thought they'd fill short falls in my stash.

On Tuesday I went to Quilters Paradise.  I couldn't find the black and white check, clown themed fabric, or a cute dog themed fabric that I was hunting.  I did find this great confetti dot that was near the end of the bolt.  You can see the rest came home with me =^.^=.  I've had this fabric before and loved it.

Saturday I met up with Kerry for lunch.  Afterwards we headed over to Quilters Choice which again sadly will be closing their store at the end of July.  Kathy wants to retire and travel with her husband instead of being tied to a store.  There are lots of fabrics available in her shop.  All of these have projects to go into.  The two groups in the center and left are part of what I've been hunting for.  I resigned on the clown themed fabric and chose the wild zig zag print with the teal as the inner border that will complete my July UFO with Judy that I'm calling Klowning.  The fabrics in the middle are the dog themed fabrics for the San Diego Humane Society Fur Ball donation due end of August.  The three on the right are for another UFO with Judy not yet selected.

I'm not happy to record purchases, especially without recording a use...but sometimes it just has to be that way.  I'll be sewing away with six more UFOs and who knows what else to bring the net to a figure I'm happy with before the end of the year.

June's Corn and Beans block complete!  This one is really colorful.  I tried to add back in more of the browns and cheddards that was used in the first two blocks but you can see it was a feable attempt.  Looks like blue won out on this one.  I do love it though.  I'm finding I like the more colorful blocks since March's Trip Around the World block.  I still think they'll all work together in the end.

Can't wait to hear what Jo selects for July in this Quilt Square Quilt Along with the wonderful designs of Lori Smith in her Quilt Squares pattern series.  This block comes from Quilt Squares #4.

I'm off to a little exercise then meet up for lunch with Kerry.  When I'm in that area I'll be stopping by at Quilter's Choice to see if they have any of the fabrics I'm looking for.  I need three different novelty fabrics; a black and white 1/4" check, a clown themed fabric for borders, a dog themed fabric for borders.  Enjoy your Saturday.

Today thankfully is HUMP DAY!  A long week for me considering last week I had two and a half days off.  This week it's five full nine hour days.  I took a lunch break looking for this fabric that will be the sashing for the Hot Air Balloon quilt of my Mom's. 

I was also looking for a border fabric for the San Diego Humane Society quilt (pattern shown #713 K9 Kwilts) that Kerry and I will be donating for the 26th Auunal Fur Ball to be held August 25th.

I went first to Quilter's Paradise in Escondido where of course I found something to purchase...but of course not what I was looking for.  I've purchased this fabric once before and loved it. It was at the end of the bolt so...I brought the rest home. 

Next on the way back to the office I stopped at Bits and Pieces also in Escondido and was more than surprised to see the store closed.  I took out my iPhone and tried to track down where they may have moved to without luck.  I don't recall any notice of them closing.  I sure hope not as I really liked the shop.  I recall the taco shop that was next door having a fire and smoke damage to lots of the fabrics, but certainly not a closing of the store.  Calling the shop gave me a change of number which I tried but no answer.  A search for location only gave me the one I was sitting in front of.  Looks grim...anyone know what happened?  So I'm still in need of a black and white ~1/4" check and 5/8 yard of dog theme border fabric.  Kerry is going to look at a couple of the quilt shops in the south part of the county in the coming days.  Hope she'll have some luck. 

If not this piece from Quilter's Paradise might just need to work.  Novelty dog fabric is not so easy to locate.

Meanwhile I continue working on Klowning.  Have all the blocks together along with the sashing.  Rows are next!

The mail person brought me Susie's Crabapple Swap blocks today.  They look great Susie.  I know you had a tough time getting them done recovering from your recent elbow surgery.  Get better quick we'll be doing another swap in the not too distant future.  So that leaves five more to turn in...you know who you are!!

Design Wall Monday, June 25, 2012

Since I finished my June UFO so quick, I decided to get a start on another UFO that hasn't yet been selected.  This one is Klowning.  It's a Bonnie Hunter design called Little Monkey that is FREE on her website.  These are the 36 blocks it will take.  I've decided on a purple for the cornerstones of the sashing.  This one is going together super fast as the HSTs were already finished; leftovers from my Kerfuffle quilt made earlier this year.  The 2" green or yellow centers were already cut too.  I found the black multi dot and more of the white on white for the connector squares and the sashing. 

I've spent Sunday evening cutting out my Quilt Square Quilt Along block that's due the end of the month with Jo's Country Junction.  It's the Corn and Beans block at the top left that I'll be making.  All these squares become triangles.  The smaller squares (1 7/8") become HSTs.  I made an attempt to go back to cheddar and brown as the primary color, but still pick up the newer fabrics I've been adding the last three months.

I mentioned having spotted this cute pattern and fabric on a trip to Joann's during my Mom's recent visit.  Yesterday was a nice day to whip it up.  Seemed funny to be sewing with a 5/8" seam =^.^=!

I will be sewing more on this project today.  It is one on the 2012 UFO list that hasn't been selected yet.  It is a Bonnie Hunter design call Little Monkey.  I'll be calling mine Klowning :)!  All pieces except the black dot and white connector strips were already sewn and cut.  Getting to the chain assembly was easy.  When I made Kerfuffle a few months back I made way too many HSTs which has turned out to be perfect for Klowning.  I'll be making 36 of this block that get connected to sashing with corner stones and a border.

Nothing used or added this past week.  Laundry awaits me...

My two challenges for June have been revealed.  Above is the Tree of Life pattern that is #12 from the 2012 UFO Patchwork Times Challenge.  This one should come together very quickly.  Its a miniature that measures 11" x 13" by the Temecula Quilt Company.  I am interested in miniatures, but haven't done many of them yet in my quilting.  Not sure what color fabric I'll be using.  Any ideas for a "K" name?  How about Koppice (coppice) which means a grove of small trees?  I'll probably take the extra sewing time during the month to get ahead on one or both of two remaining UFOs that have lots of HSTs, Klowning and Kaktus.

Next up is the pattern Corn and Beans that is shown on the right in the top row.  I might bring this one back into more terra cottas and browns like I used in the Log Cabin pattern that was January's block.

2012 UFO Challenges, December 20, 2011

Here are my 2012 UFO Challenges:

#1 Kokonut No!  This is a pattern called Sunshine Pineapple a Quilting Time Pattern 103.  I've been wanting to make this one for years...since 2007 when I purchased the pattern.  2012 is it's year!

#2 Kamile.  This pattern is called Perennial Petals from Quiltmaker Magazine Issue Mar/Apr 2011 by Caroline Reardon.  I've started this one only through copying the pattern for the paper piecing technique that will be used to assemble it.  Should be easy to grab from my stash.

#3 Klowning.  Bonnie Hunter's Little Monkey design that was offered on her blog last year.  I'm still not completely sold with this name.  It will use up a lot of stash which is famous for Bonnie's designs.

#4 Knoted.  Judy Laquardia design called Note to Self.  This one caught my attention.  Looks like a simple design, but has a bunch of character.  I'm all about using up my stash and this one will be good for it too!

#5 Kontinuum.  Judy Laquardia design called Connect the Dots.  I love Judy's borders.  She's so clever in her designs.  You'll be noticing that I've got lots of her designs in my UFO list for 2012.

#6 Kaktus.  Design called Prickly Pear that was in Quilters News Magazine in June 1997 by Terri Lynn Ballard.  Yep this one is a pattern I've been thinking about for a long time.  It has lots of pieces but again notice the trend USE STASH!

#7 Klappers.  Judy Laquardia design called Jazzy Nights that was offered in Quiltmaker Magazine Issue Sep/Oct 2010.  The name is funny don't you think?  Can't wait to get to this one...again a stash buster for me...except the Kona black fabric that I'll be needing.  Love that Kona black!

#8 Kollinwood Konnections.  Judy Laquardia design called Road to Brownwood that was offered on her blog last year.  Collinwood happens to be the street that my parents live on.  Just a simple change of letters.  I'd say I have connections to Collinwood wouldn't you? 

#9 Kooky Kins.  A Buggy Barn pattern called Crazy Jacks.  This will be the second project from this pattern.  This one will be for me.  I've already got most of the fabrics set aside.  If you've never tried one of the Buggy Barn patterns I suggest them.  Very whimsical designs and a totally different approach to putting the pieces together!

#10 Kommodore.  A Judy Laquardia design called Indigo that was offered on her blog last year.  Everyone feel in love with this project that Judy offers free on her blog.  It was for her Monochromatic Challenge when the color was Indigo that month.  I'm not sure I have enough of these colors, but it's fabulous in these blue purple tones.  You may wonder what Kommodore has to do with Indigo...well commodore happens to be the color to the left of indigo in Sherwin Williams palate of colors LOL!  I just may be raiding my Mom and Kerry's stash...watch out you two!

#11 Klunky Korners.  I've had two suggestions on a name for this project; Kat in the Korner and Klunky Korners...  A Bonnie Hunter design that I'm coordinating in a block swap with 15 others.  The swap blocks are due 2/29/12.  Joan and Collette are already finished with their swap blocks.  Mom and I cut out pieces when I was visiting during Thanksgiving 2011.  Our swappers are in southern Maryland and the San Diego, Ca area.

#12 Koppice.  A pattern from the Temecula Quilt Co called A Tree of Life.  This one is tiny at 11" x 13".  The month this is selected will be an easy month.

I'm also going to work at getting done what was on the 2011 UFO list that didn't get finished.  Koda's Keeper, Kartwheels, Komplicated, Kaskade, Kurry, Krossfire, and Koriander Kompass.  Yes I'm not happy that I didn't get these done; I'm not the type to set goals without results.  A 30% success just isn't what it should be!
