Tuesday I finished up Kamp Kastles.  It was fun having so many quilts to show and share with at Sunshine Quilt Guild.  I was not at the October meeting so I had a trunk show!  Six quilts ranging in sizes from Kindergarten at 17" x 22" to Koda's Keeper at 66" x 71".  Sure was wonderful hearing how everyone had missed seeing me in October.  If you go to the side bar and select 2013 Finishes you will be able to see what I shared at the meeting.  It is the last six quilts.  Which one is your favorite name?

Wednesday I worked on Kloudburst's binding during lunchtime and will continue on it tonight.  Sure hope DH has something I consider watchable on the television.  Sunshine...I'm already getting ready for December's meeting.  When I emptied my mail box after work the pattern I ordered from Fat Quarters Quilt Shop in Vista, CA arrived.  Tiny Treasures from Pieces From My Heart designed by Sandy Gervais.  It will measure 16" x 16" when finished.  The sample was just too cute not to get the pattern.  Not sure when it will be made.  I don't think this one will become a UFO!  Get your thinking caps on for a name....

Koda's Keeper is finished.  One of the 2011 UFOs that is done in 2013.  It is hard to see it but there is a real cute quilting pattern used, a buzzing bee. Kerry did a great job as usual carrying out the quilting.  This quilt has a very special meaning to me.  It was made to go along with Koda, a quilt that was made for my niece Morgan.  Her Mom and Dad were to use this quilt on those cooler evenings when Koda kept Morgan warm.  Morgan's nursery was all decorated with bears and these two quilts fit just perfect.  I plan to keep Koda's Keeper until the right time when Morgan will know how special this quilt has become.  My brother would have been a great Daddy.  Love you always Steve. 

Koda's Keeper was as a result of the 2007 Block Exchange with Canyon Quilters.  These quilters helped me create a wonderful quilt. I'll soon be at Canyon to share with all of you.  There were too many bears to fit on the front so several of the blocks make up the back as well.

Design Wall Monday, November 11, 2013

Kookaburra is active on my Design Wall today.  I have all the units for the pieced border assembled as well as the four corner units.  After I get some additional small scale black with white print fabrics more sewing can be done to the center.  In the meantime, if I can't get the fabric I need, the border pieces are to be sewn into pairs so I will continue there.  I hope to get by one of the quilt shops tomorrow.  I'm anxious to have Kookaburra finished this week.

I found some time to put down the binding on Koda's Keeper.  I didn't get time to photograph, but plan to do this later tonight.  I'm very happy with how this 2007 Block Exchange Challenge with Canyon Quilters turned out.

Sunday Stash Report, November 10, 2013

I have another change to my Stash Report this week.  It is an add, but one that was necessary to complete Kookaburra.  There was enough of the right fabric in my stash to fulfill the inner border requirement not enough for the outer border.  Believe me I really tried.  Finding blacks that will work with a 30s feel isn't that easy.  A solid black Kona cotton is what I had for the inner border.  The more solid fabric above is what I will use for the outer border.  I have already put the fabric to use.  I'm busy making chevrons for the zigzag pieced border.

 There is one row of zigzag around the quilt.  That second row you see is just the start of the next row.  There is a solid black solid piece to match the inside part of the zigzag that will be sewn between the center and the pieced border.  Then a single piece outer border using that nearly solid will be the final addition that matches the outside part of the zigzag.  Binding will be from the solid black.  I'm on course to having Kookaburra done this week.

Oh and that black and white print is to add to my stash right now without a project in mind.  I like the design of the print...don't you?

Krossfire Border Templates and Foundations

For this first Monday in November I have several projects in different stages in work.  I have the center done on Krossfire.  What is next is making templates for fabric cutting and separating the foundation pieces of the border.  The border is spiky like the center.  It will complete the stars on the perimeter with light and dark teals.  I will be putting this project aside to finish my November 2013 UFO.

2013 November UFO

Kuibble is my November 2013 UFO project.  I will be using 30's fabrics; a first in this fabric style for me.  The block shown is the basic block.  I will be making 100 of these to start.  The then have additional pieces added to make four different variations.  Most of the cutting is done already.  More to come on this project in the days ahead.

This one is done, of course there was just this one block to do.  It is for Sunshine Quilt Guild's November BOM.  The design is Bonnie Hunter's Dancing Nine Patch.  Provided is the flannel brown sashing fabric.  Participants were to supply the 2" 9-patch fabrics.

  

My binding is queued up now too.  Kerry finished four quilts that I picked up over the weekend.  From left to right is Kamp Kastles, Kindergarten, Koda's Keeper, and Kloudburst.  I will be giving a better look once the binding is in place.

Sunday Stash Report, March 10, 2013

I continued on the San Diego County Cruisin' Quilters Run this past week.  I got to another three shops.  Fortunately all of these purchases will be USED pretty soon.

To complete the binding on Koda's Keeper I needed enough for a binding.  I'll probably also use some of this for stash enhancement.  Sue helped me by stopping by Crazy 9 Patch for it early in the week.

Kerry and I took in Country Loft, Rosie's, and Memory Lane where purchases were made for Seven Sisters Simplified and three Christmas Ornaments I have in the making.  3 1/2 yards was what I came home with.

So for this past week I brought the total purchase up a bit, but will claim a little with the completion of the fourth Christmas Ornament that Kerry slipped in and finished.  I'll have pictures to show of completions in the next couple of days once the binding is hand sewn down.  I had fun with the Cruisin' Quilters run this year.  I just might find myself making a few of the cute block designs that every shop passed out.

Design Wall Monday, March 4, 2013

Hard to see the background pieces, but there are a bunch on the wall.  I have five blocks laid out so far with lots more pineapple sections to assemble.  In total 30 need to be made for this project.  So what do you think so far of Khambray?  

You can see on the left the process for assembling the pineapple sections.  Start with a triangle made into a square with background fabric.  Next slice it up equally four times, invert each piece and reassemble.  Khambray is going together quite nicely so far.  Khambray is my March UFO.

This is Koda's Keeper all finished.  I spent time yesterday putting together the back.  So nice to have this project done.  Koda's Keeper has been in my sewing room since 2007!

Sunday Stash Report, March 3, 2013

I did some adding this week...  I did pretty good considering I was on the first part of the Cruisin' Quilters Shop Hop that runs March 1-10.  I made it to five shops and only brought home for projects that needed something more to finish.  The purchases are for Seven Sisters Simplified which I've yet to name with a "K"; Koda's Keeper; and finally Konfidential.  It was tough but I did restrain myself with purchasing a new brown inner border fabric for Koda's Keeper.  I knew I had something that would work from my stash.

It is a real guess on how much fabric I pulled out of my stash for Koda's Keeper.  It was a block exchange that took place in 2007-2008.  I included some fabrics for possibilities and participants added some in too.  Think I'll count the purchase for the outer border, inner border, 2 yards for the top because that sounds good, the binding and the back.  8 yards should be somewhere in the ball park.  So here's my numbers for this first week of March 2013.

I started assembling Khambray yesterday when I finished organizing my Shop Hop purchases.  I'm loving what I see so far.  I'll be back at it today for awhile.  So nice having the pieces already cut...allowed me to have results really quick.  My first impression is that I may want to keep the gold with teal out of the centers. Still lots of time to figure that part out, but my instincts are telling me it doesn't fit.  If you are just tuning in Khambray is my March 2013 UFO Challenge (#1) with www.52Quilts.com.

I will find time to finish Koda's Keeper borders and assemble Konfidential's back now that I have all I need to finish them.  There's a possibility of seeing Kerry tomorrow so I'd like to be ready with these two projects if it works out that way.

I've had a fun day running around San Diego country during the first day of the Cruisin' Quilters Shop Hop.  I visited five different shops.  The shops were Starry Night Hollow, Quilt in a Day, Fat Quarters Quilt Shop, Grand Country Quilters, and Crazy 9 Patch.  I was even a winner at Quilt in a Day; lucky #26 got me the pattern in the top left.  The theme of this years run "Just Deserts!  Each shop featured a deserts pattern and a recipe to compliment it.  Grand Country Quilters is a new shop that I'd not been to previously.  Here's what I brought home...

From Crazy 9 Patch the yardage at the top right for the remaining portions of the outer border.  I had thought to get a solid but this small dot is a very good match.  I will need to add an inner border to set it apart from some of the beiges.  I was nudged to buying a brown, but I knew my stash would have something   that I could use. 

My last quilty news to share is #1 UFO for March.  Marti from 52 Quilts pulled this months project today.  Mine is already cut and ready to sew.  I'll be eager to get this one going.  Check out my 2013 UFO list on the side bar for more information on Khambray.

In 2007 Canyon Quilters had a block swap.  I coordinated that swap with Kerry's and Sue's help.  We had 15 participants with all kinds of blocks that were of their choice.  We started in October and went through June of 2008.  These are the blocks I ended up with that were from Debra, Carrie, Toni, Collette, Sheryl, Barbara, Deb, and Kathe.  I added a few blocks to fill in some of the spaces and a few will be sewn into the back.

The sashing was perfect and bringing in a bunch more blue seemed to be right.  Blue is what I'm thinking for the binding at the moment.  Thanks a bunch for helping me create a very cute quilt!  So nice to be getting a 2011 UFO done even if it is a bit late...

I'm out being a Cruisin' Quilter today.  Who knows what goodies I'll come home with.  I've got at least six things on my list to look for that will help me finish a few projects...and start a couple too!

Today's project is to put Koda's Keeper together.  This is the final layout I've decided upon.  I'll adjust the size of the sashing as the sections are put together so that they will all finish in this width and length.  You know how tricky that can be.  There are two sashing pieces going the wrong way, they are in the middle; I will be correcting this. For the outside border I'll be using my coupons from pre-registering for the San Diego Cruisin' Quilters Shop Hop.  I'll be trying to match the background of the HST Bear Paws with a solid.  I think the quilt doesn't need an inner border.  What do you think?

Koda's Keeper

I've been organizing my projects and landed on Koda's Keeper as the project to work on this coming week.  Koda's Keeper is a quilt that I was making for my brother Steve and his wife.  It was the adult quilt that kept with the theme of teddy bears.  The teddy bear theme was for my niece Morgan's nursery.  Morgan got Koda.  

Sadly Steve didn't get a chance to wrap up in Koda's Keeper because of his sudden passing just days after Morgan was born.  I've not been able to work on this project, but now it's time.  Koda's Keeper started as a block exchange with members of Canyon Quilt Guild in 2007.  The only criteria was to make an adultish teddy bear quilt in browns with blues, yellows and accents in pink.  Everyone followed pretty well.  I've ended up with a bunch of bear paws and nearly as many bears.  I'm still working on a layout along with an additional bear or two not to mention some more bear paws.  It is scrappy, but I held back many of the original fabrics to help with additions if they were needed.

I'm rearranging a couple of the bear paws to get more of the blue and yellow into the quilt.  I just love the FREE Antique Bear applique patterns by Annette Truong of www.fourtwinsisters.com. I'm planning on at least one more if not two.  I also have a pattern from a Quiltmaker Magazine, May/June '03 issue with a bear flying away by a balloon.  This project is a 2011 UFO that gets finished in 2013!

Koda's Keeper

Happy Monday!  Today I begin with Koda's Keeper on my design wall.  This project has been sitting too long; time to get it done.  Its been in this state for five years now.  It started out to be for my brother Steve and his wife Tammy when my niece Morgan was born.

Morgan has her Koda quilt, but circumstances made it emotionally difficult to finish Koda's Keeper.  Steve passed away quite unexpectedly just days after Morgan was born.  Five year will always seem like yesterday.  This quilt must be finished.  I had it as a 2011 UFO Challenge...as you can see that didn't get it done either.  I'll be making a few more applique bears because I really like these patterns.  Some more bear paw blocks might be made too.  I think it needs more pink, blue, and yellow.  Perhaps the setting pieces will be more neutral fabrics so the applique bears "float".  First up is to prepare some patterns for applique.

Karen stopped by with her neutral blocks today.  I can't say enough about how all of the blocks look.  Everyone should be really happy in a couple of weeks when their part of the swap gets to them.  My guess is that there will be a bunch of page turning of Bonnie Hunter's String Fling book!

2011 UFO Challenges, January 1, 2011

Here are my ten 2011 UFO Challenges.

#1  Kourageous.  This is an idea for a project that I thought of about three years ago.  It was started collecting fabrics during the 2008 Cruisin' Quilters Run.  It will be a collection of foundation pieced exotic flower blocks using animal skin themed fabrics with a black/dark brown background.  This UFO will be done as a BOM on Patchwork Times 2011 UFO Challenge.  Each month a number is selected I'll do that block.  Should be fun!  Here's a picture of the fabrics I'll be using.

#2  Geese in Flight.  This is a group of blocks won in December 2009 with the BAE Systems Quilters.  This quilt will go to charity.

#3  Koda's Keeper.  This is a group of blocks from a Block Exchange started in September 2007 with Canyon Quilters.  This quilt was the quilt made for my brother Steve and his wife Tammy.  It's named as the parent of Koda that is the first quilt made for my niece Morgan.  Both quilts were designed to match the bear theme of Morgan's nursery.

#4  Kartwheels.  This is a pattern by Judy Niemeyer called Mariner's Star.  I've purchased the back and several FQs from Sew Batik in July 2009.  The rest of the fabrics needed will be pulled from my stash.

#5  Komfort Kove.  This is a pattern by Theresa Eisinger called Pinwheel Cove that was published in the Quiltmaker Magazine July/August 2010 issue.  I've got the back and the white fabric (pieces cut).  The rest of the fabrics needed will also be pulled from my stash.

#6  Krossfire.  This is a pattern by Judy Niemeyer called Jumping Jax Flash.  I've got the back and the rest of the fabrics will come from my stash.

#7  Kurry.  Judy Niemeyer pattern called Briar Patch.  Only back purchased for this.  Again a stash buster!

#8  Koriander Kompass.  Brenda Henning pattern called Spice Islands Compass published in the Fons and Porter's Love of Quilting Magazine March/April 2007 issue.  Have only one other piece of fabric besides the back.  If I have enough stash it will be a buster too.

In Work

#9  Kaskade.  Deb Lutrell designed this one that she calls Ice Castles.  It's from McCall's Quilting January/February 2009 issue.  I have two pieces of fabric with hopes of getting a piece I love for the back from Quilters Connection.  It has my name on the piece, but its first slated for the owner of the shop...I may have an opportunity to what's left.  If not I'll be purchasing something.  By this time it's doubtful that large pieces will be in the dwindling stash :) (a good thing).  Other fabrics will come from my stash as this is also a scrappy quilt project.

#10  Komplikated.  Bonnie Hunter designed this one she calls Patches and Pinwheels.  I first saw it in the September/October 2008 Quiltmaker Magazine issue.  This one is definitely a scrappy quilt.  It will empty my 2" stash strips and blocks stash for sure.  I'll put a border on it based on the color the center calls out for.  This is a picture of Bonnie's quilt.
