Design Wall Monday, September 2, 2013

Happy Birthday Dad!  A true day of labor for my Grandma so many years ago.  Happy Labor Day to you all.

I've been busy getting ready for the San Diego Quilt Show turn in which is today.  I spent most of the week on the last two quilts that I have entered.  Koriander Kompass was earlier this week and Kartwheels had me busy the last two days.  Both are hot off the long arm at Kerry's Quilting.  Gorgeous are both of them with specially designed quilting patterns and a top notch execution.  Kalahari and Khambray are my two other entries this year.  Each one different colors and techniques along with designs by some of quilting's best.  If you are going to the show that starts Wednesday night be sure to look for them.  

I've been getting ready for two classes this week as well.  One is at the quilt show on Thursday with Joyce Weeks and the other at Bits and Pieces with Julanne Bergstrom on Saturday.  I've been showing the fabrics for Konqueror and If the Hat Fits in the past couple of posts.  Later this week I'll be showing my progress.  I've got another name challenge with If the Hat Fits; get your thinking caps on.  It is a Buggy Barn pattern with witches on broom sticks.  Krazy as part of the name would be fabulous.

For now though I've been back working on Wendy's L-Medallion project.  I have the middle and the setting of these blocks in work right now...starting with the pinwheels.

The other project started that needs to be finished in two weeks...EEK!...is just beginning.  First up is to transfer the pattern onto freezer paper.  There will be a stack of 12 fabrics put under this for cutting on the lines of the pattern.  Then there is the crazy Buggy Barn shuffle next.  The designs are a blast.  I've got a named selected for this one, Kounting Kandles.

Marti just let us know what UFO to work on for September in our 2013 UFO challenge.  It is #6.  I'm anxious to get busy on this one.  It's paper pieced.  The design is called Jeweled Forest.  I'll be calling my version Kamp Kastles.

Khambray

Except for the label Khambray is done.  I sure love this design by Cathy Wierzbicki from her Geometric Gems book called Pineapple Nine Patch.  Diamond Dust another design in her book intrigues me too...  Khambray is all from stash and was a 2013 UFO from earlier this year.  The quilting is awesome; not that I'd ever expect less from Kerry. 

Thanks Bets on pointing out my OOPS! on Kloudburst.  I hope that I would have caught it when I was pressing, but you sure helped out a bunch with your comment.  That top right gold/background HST is definitely rotated wrong.  Points to the center a must!!!

Nothing on my design wall today.  Projects finished that were there. It's on to cutting the next project.  There are two I'll be working on Kaskade (yet another 2011 UFO to complete) and ice cream quilt #2 for the Moore, OK kids.  Have you been involved with the Ice Cream Social for the 1st/2nd graders?  For more information on this worthy cause leave a comment and I'll provide details.

I've got trimming, binding, and a label to prepare.  I'll try to get a closeup of the quilting...it is great.  I'm so happy with how Khambray turned out.

Last night I cut out one of the two ice cream quilts.  Today I'll be sewing these blocks together.  I'd hoped to have enough background to use for the outside borders, but my fabric ran out...  It will be back to my stash to find something else!

Kwitcherbitchin

Kwitcherbitchin is in line for binding.  I'll have this done sometime today along with working on Koriander Kompass.

Due to the center fabric colors I moved some of the blocks around again.  The dark blocks are still in the corners; it is the pinks that I moved a bit.  So how do all these centers look?  I have 28 more background units to make.  I have most of what I need cut out; time for sewing them together.  Chore day should give me enough sewing time.

Monday should be ready to start assembling June 2013 UFO #9 Kloudburst.  I have nothing to report this week either purchase or used.  Next week looks pretty good for yardage from Koriander Kompass.  Kerry has March 2013 UFO #1 Khambray next up for quilting.  If you are interested in seeing either of these two 2013 UFO projects check out my 2013 UFO Page.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  I'd forgotten until just hours ago that I'd never taken Patrick out of the closet to help us celebrate this day.  Hope you have a lucky day.  I'm planning on something Irish for dinner...just what is yet to be discovered!

Khambray is done.  I was able to finish it yesterday and it's now in Kerry's Quilting queue.  I found a little trouble with Cathy Wiersbicki's pattern when it came to the outside border.  I found the top and bottom didn't need the 3" cut from each end as directed and the side borders were about 7" short.  I checked all my seams and everything measured right.  Fortunately I had enough scrappy fabrics left to make it all work.  Teal YLI thread is planned, a goldish black for Sew Batik, and a feathery looking quilting pattern called Exquisite will be used.  I've got a stripe in teal and gold that will be used for the binding when the time comes.  So today I have yardage to input to the "USED" statistic!

 I've also got lots of binding to do.  These three are all at the half binding stage awaiting their turn.  Do you recognize any of them?  I'll share a full frontal when their finished.

These are the last three Ornaments to be finished.  Kerry quilted them up yesterday.  I plan red binding for each of them.

Khambray

Time to assemble!  I can see that used fabrics stat changing on Sunday!  I've finished all the units now.  Taken the time this morning to mix up the blocks nicely.  Now it's time to sew the blocks together and put the borders on.

I've got three small quilts completely done.  Kerry quilted them up for me last week.  First up is Koppice that was a 2012 UFO completed on time but hadn't been quilted.  I thought about trying to quilt it myself, but why when Kerry's Quilting does such a fantastic job.  Koppice is from a pattern I picked up at Temecula Quilt Co in Temecula, CA.  It's from A Collection of Small Red and White Quilts.

Next Kadette was completed.  Natural thread was used and the pattern changed for each block, but they were all on the same batting and back making the quilting just a bit quicker.  Kadette was a 2013 UFO.  Its from a pattern called United We Stand by Mary Herschleb Designs.  I enjoyed the tiny paper pieced pieces.  There will be another one to make in the future as promised.

Last but not least, a Christmas Gift for someone special made well ahead of time.  I've got three others in different colors done ready for Kerry's Quilting.  The pattern is by Quilt-Pro Systems.  It was their Block of The Day on December 5, 2012.  It was designed as a paper pieced 4" square pattern that I enlarged.  It should make a nice decoration for a small space.

I've got three other larger projects in the binding queue.  You'll be seeing No Klucks Here Either!, Kooky Kins, and Krabapple in the next few days.  Kerry's also suggested that the next three ornament blocks can be done tomorrow while we are sewing together for the day.

I'm off to Bits and Pieces where they are holding the newest Buggy Barn book for me.  They ordered six and got them in just yesterday...all are already spoken for!  I'll be needing mine for a workshop I'll be taking on May 4th.  We'll be doing When the Cows Come Home which is the feature design in the new book.

I was busy last night.  After my work day it was on to the grocery store.  Picked up what was needed for the week and then home.  I made a cake...four layers...quite unusual for me.  My Mom and Sister are the bakers in my family...  It's an Italian Cream Cheese Cake that my Sister found the recipe on Pintrest. I thought it would be wonderful to share it tonight with my friends at the Sunshine Quilt Guild monthly meeting.  I also made sweet and sour pork for our dinner.  After cleaning up a very big pile of dishes I was off to the sewing room to work on Khambray.  I achieved my goal for the day in sewing all the blocks together.  Wednesday I'll move on to the sashing.

Design Wall Monday, March 11, 2013

I'm nearly finished assembling the blocks for Khambray.  I have only a few left more to assemble and then it's on to the sashing.  The sashing finishes out the outer parts of the pinwheel.  I debated about using the gold in the center blocks, but Collette came by and helped me with a second pair of eyes.  I've got a few more to put into the mix.

I'm hoping tonight gets me finished with the blocks.  Tuesday is Sunshine Quilt Guild so what doesn't get finished tonight will wait until Wednesday.

I don't know where Bonnie Hunter comes up with artwork she attaches to her posts, but I'm excited to share them.  I have been asked in the past "do you wind only one bobbin when you need one at a time or several?"  I usually do several unless of course it is a thread color I don't often use.  Speaking of thread time for me to pick up some more Natural Star spools.  I just can't seem to keep enough of this thread on hand! 

I took time away from my sewing room on Monday to watch Killing Lincoln which was aired on the History Channel recently.  (DH always records programs and watches them sometime later so he can fast forward through the commercials.)  The format wasn't exactly as I expected although Tom Hanks did a great job narrating.  Much of the events during that time took place in the area where my parents live now; so I was pretty familiar with many of the places mentioned.  If you have the opportunity to watch it there are lots of details I found interesting.

Here is where I stand today with Khambray.  I've not started putting the blocks together because I want to make sure I have the best variety in each.  I'm still sewing the first units together.  I am thinking by Friday I should be sewing the 30 blocks together.

Hard to see the background pieces, but there are a bunch on the wall.  I have five blocks laid out so far with lots more pineapple sections to assemble.  In total 30 need to be made for this project.  So what do you think so far of Khambray?  

You can see on the left the process for assembling the pineapple sections.  Start with a triangle made into a square with background fabric.  Next slice it up equally four times, invert each piece and reassemble.  Khambray is going together quite nicely so far.  Khambray is my March UFO.

This is Koda's Keeper all finished.  I spent time yesterday putting together the back.  So nice to have this project done.  Koda's Keeper has been in my sewing room since 2007!

Sunday Stash Report, March 3, 2013

I did some adding this week...  I did pretty good considering I was on the first part of the Cruisin' Quilters Shop Hop that runs March 1-10.  I made it to five shops and only brought home for projects that needed something more to finish.  The purchases are for Seven Sisters Simplified which I've yet to name with a "K"; Koda's Keeper; and finally Konfidential.  It was tough but I did restrain myself with purchasing a new brown inner border fabric for Koda's Keeper.  I knew I had something that would work from my stash.

It is a real guess on how much fabric I pulled out of my stash for Koda's Keeper.  It was a block exchange that took place in 2007-2008.  I included some fabrics for possibilities and participants added some in too.  Think I'll count the purchase for the outer border, inner border, 2 yards for the top because that sounds good, the binding and the back.  8 yards should be somewhere in the ball park.  So here's my numbers for this first week of March 2013.

I started assembling Khambray yesterday when I finished organizing my Shop Hop purchases.  I'm loving what I see so far.  I'll be back at it today for awhile.  So nice having the pieces already cut...allowed me to have results really quick.  My first impression is that I may want to keep the gold with teal out of the centers. Still lots of time to figure that part out, but my instincts are telling me it doesn't fit.  If you are just tuning in Khambray is my March 2013 UFO Challenge (#1) with www.52Quilts.com.

I will find time to finish Koda's Keeper borders and assemble Konfidential's back now that I have all I need to finish them.  There's a possibility of seeing Kerry tomorrow so I'd like to be ready with these two projects if it works out that way.

I've had a fun day running around San Diego country during the first day of the Cruisin' Quilters Shop Hop.  I visited five different shops.  The shops were Starry Night Hollow, Quilt in a Day, Fat Quarters Quilt Shop, Grand Country Quilters, and Crazy 9 Patch.  I was even a winner at Quilt in a Day; lucky #26 got me the pattern in the top left.  The theme of this years run "Just Deserts!  Each shop featured a deserts pattern and a recipe to compliment it.  Grand Country Quilters is a new shop that I'd not been to previously.  Here's what I brought home...

Koda's Keeper

From Crazy 9 Patch the yardage at the top right for the remaining portions of the outer border.  I had thought to get a solid but this small dot is a very good match.  I will need to add an inner border to set it apart from some of the beiges.  I was nudged to buying a brown, but I knew my stash would have something   that I could use. 

My last quilty news to share is #1 UFO for March.  Marti from 52 Quilts pulled this months project today.  Mine is already cut and ready to sew.  I'll be eager to get this one going.  Check out my 2013 UFO list on the side bar for more information on Khambray.

Today I've spent much of my time hand sewing binding down.  Around dinner time I started working on the last quilt square for the 2012 Quilt Square Quilt Along that I've been participating in through Jo's Country Junction.  I'll be making the single star block in Lori Smith's #6 Pattern.  I'm hoping to get it finished today.

No changes in my stash report this week.  I did finish cutting out Khambray and Step 3 of Bonnie Hunter's Easy Street.  I'm keeping my sewing table clear for Step 4.

Last night I finished the sewing for Step 3 of Easy Street.  If you haven't heard its Bonnie Hunter's annual mystery time...  This morning I cleaned all of them up by taking off the dog ears.  All set for Step 4!

Here's all the steps so far...I'm betting we are going to be putting these units together next week.  Did you notice the cats that I managed to get in these units?  I've got a purple and a teal cat print that I'm covertly including.  Besides naming my quilts with a "K"; I also try to include a cat fabric too...make you look a bit at my quilts!  Hmm...starting to think of a name for this mystery...something that says Easy and Mystery...ideas welcome.  Bonnie, bring on the GREEN!

Back to the cutting of Khambray that will be one of the projects I work on in 2013.  I have most of the background still to cut.  The darks are all done.  I'll need more of the dark for the borders.  I don't have nearly the 2 1/2" strips that it will take to make this Pineapple Nine Patch by Cathy Wierzbicki.

Easy Street Part 2 done!  Sunday I completed the finishing touches, pressing and snipping dog ears.  Ready for Part 3 of Bonnie Hunter's Easy Street Mystery.

So that I don't get too much going at the same time I've been cutting the projects I'll work on in 2013.  Gosh that's just a few weeks away.  This one is Kalahari.  A design called Havenstone by Pat Whys.  I love nearly all the designs in her book Spotlight on Neutrals.  All the fabrics are Batiks.  I'm going to enjoy putting Kalahari together.

Khambray is next to cut.  It is a design by Cathy Wierzbicki called Pineapple Nine Patch in her book Geometric Gems.  The design is really clever.  I'll be sharing it with you when I start sewing.  Khambray will be in ivorys and blues.  The fabrics you see are just the start of what I'll be using.  I'm pretty certain everything can come from my stash.

Sunday Stash Report, March 4, 2012

I've had a fun time purchasing fabric this week...not good for the report today, but most all of it will come off in March.  You see most of it was for fabric to make my #8 2012 March UFO with Patchwork Times.  I'll be making Road to Brownwood one of the  designs you can get on Patchwork Times FREE patterns tab.  My project is to be called Konnections to Kollinwood simply because of the relationship to where my parents live and the easy of changing two "Cs" to that sought after "K".  I picked up these fabrics from three different quilt shops.  The three greens are from Beverly's, the three camel fabrics from Amidon's and the purple from Rosie's.  I'll be stopping just after the pieced border and use the dark camel for the binding.

I spotted this pattern on Quiltville Chat (Bonnie Hunter's Yahoo Group) recently.  I picked up a few dark teals to go along with others I've already got in my stash to make this project.  It's not something I need to get done right away.  It will go together fast I believe.  It is called Pineapple Nine Patch from the Cathy Wierzbicki book called Geometric Gems.  (I spent enough at Rosie's that I was able to get the book 40% off. WINK!)

I picked up this purple FQ just because I liked it.  I believe it will have a home in another 2012 UFO whose number has yet to be called.  Krazy Kins will use bright oranges and bright purples.

I'm still working on trimming up the flying geese of Bonnie Hunter's Orca Bay.  Kordova Klosure just might get done soon...sure hoping so.  The stack closest to the Brooklyn Revolver on the right is yet to be trimmed up.  Then as I've been saying, it will be time for block assembly.  All other components are complete.
