Design Wall Monday, March 18 2013

I spent much of the day on Sunday binding.  I finished No Klucks Here Either! right around 3pm.  Took time out for a trip to Fresh and Easy for our Irish meal of corn beef and cabbage.  While the corn beef was cooking I pulled out the first two blocks of Kommon Kongregation and put it up on my design wall.

These two were made during the workshop earlier in the year with Marti Michell.  It is her design called Seven Sisters Simplified.  Next I paired up the background and star fabrics that best complemented each other.  My project will use a range of reproduction fabrics in various colors.  All will have a common gray background.  Let me say that I chose another difficult color in this gray.  I'm not sure I'll be able to find enough different fabrics in it as I had hoped. 

I honestly had to get myself into the Marti thinking...  Using her templates makes the project easy, but figuring out which way they go and what line to cut on was a bit of a challenge at first.  Maybe I was scanning the pattern a bit to quick.  Anyway I have it now!  Two blocks worth were cut out.

 After dinner and kitchen clean up.  It was back to the sewing room.  Now there are four with 13 more to go.  I plan on a solid gray for the large triangles that sash the blocks together.

The fifth block will be teal.  I have enough variations to make 11 blocks so I'll be looking for two more of each background and star.  I will also be keeping my eyes open for that solid gray.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  I'd forgotten until just hours ago that I'd never taken Patrick out of the closet to help us celebrate this day.  Hope you have a lucky day.  I'm planning on something Irish for dinner...just what is yet to be discovered!

Khambray is done.  I was able to finish it yesterday and it's now in Kerry's Quilting queue.  I found a little trouble with Cathy Wiersbicki's pattern when it came to the outside border.  I found the top and bottom didn't need the 3" cut from each end as directed and the side borders were about 7" short.  I checked all my seams and everything measured right.  Fortunately I had enough scrappy fabrics left to make it all work.  Teal YLI thread is planned, a goldish black for Sew Batik, and a feathery looking quilting pattern called Exquisite will be used.  I've got a stripe in teal and gold that will be used for the binding when the time comes.  So today I have yardage to input to the "USED" statistic!

 I've also got lots of binding to do.  These three are all at the half binding stage awaiting their turn.  Do you recognize any of them?  I'll share a full frontal when their finished.

These are the last three Ornaments to be finished.  Kerry quilted them up yesterday.  I plan red binding for each of them.

Khambray

Time to assemble!  I can see that used fabrics stat changing on Sunday!  I've finished all the units now.  Taken the time this morning to mix up the blocks nicely.  Now it's time to sew the blocks together and put the borders on.

I've got three small quilts completely done.  Kerry quilted them up for me last week.  First up is Koppice that was a 2012 UFO completed on time but hadn't been quilted.  I thought about trying to quilt it myself, but why when Kerry's Quilting does such a fantastic job.  Koppice is from a pattern I picked up at Temecula Quilt Co in Temecula, CA.  It's from A Collection of Small Red and White Quilts.

Next Kadette was completed.  Natural thread was used and the pattern changed for each block, but they were all on the same batting and back making the quilting just a bit quicker.  Kadette was a 2013 UFO.  Its from a pattern called United We Stand by Mary Herschleb Designs.  I enjoyed the tiny paper pieced pieces.  There will be another one to make in the future as promised.

Last but not least, a Christmas Gift for someone special made well ahead of time.  I've got three others in different colors done ready for Kerry's Quilting.  The pattern is by Quilt-Pro Systems.  It was their Block of The Day on December 5, 2012.  It was designed as a paper pieced 4" square pattern that I enlarged.  It should make a nice decoration for a small space.

I've got three other larger projects in the binding queue.  You'll be seeing No Klucks Here Either!, Kooky Kins, and Krabapple in the next few days.  Kerry's also suggested that the next three ornament blocks can be done tomorrow while we are sewing together for the day.

I'm off to Bits and Pieces where they are holding the newest Buggy Barn book for me.  They ordered six and got them in just yesterday...all are already spoken for!  I'll be needing mine for a workshop I'll be taking on May 4th.  We'll be doing When the Cows Come Home which is the feature design in the new book.

Sunday Stash Report, October 14, 2012

I'm working away on using up some neutral stash.  This project is part of a swap I am coordinating that has participants making 9" neutral strip blocks.  With this size and being neutrals the possibilities for their use are many.  Five different designs from Bonnie's new book can easily use them.  Each participant will be making 38 blocks with a due date at the end of January 2013.  19 are participating so that means a lot of variety will come to each.  I'm also making 9 patch blocks from the trimmings.

I've got two finishes to record this week.  It's been a drought lately...  Kurly Kues and No Klucks Here Either! are done.

No Klucks Here Either! is finished.  I've got something to claim as used this Sunday!  YIPPEE!!  This project was the workshop sample that I used when I taught at Quilters Paradise in September.  The pattern is of my creation that was originally put together for a quilt given to my parents last year for Thanksgiving.  Mom has her quilt No Kucks Here! back in Maryland and displayed for the Fall season.

Next on the sewing table is a charity quilt for some lucky little boy...eeks it's Pirates Matty!

Here is what Karen did with her 9-Patches from the swap I coordinated recently.  Instead of using them for the Crabapple design Karen added a few more 9-Patches to get Tumalo Trail.  Both of these designs are from Bonnie Hunter and can be found in her last two books.  Great job Karen!

I am hoping to be sewing tonight.  Real close to finishing No Klucks Here Either!  Last night I got Kerfuffle back from Kerry's Quilting.  I hope to be binding it soon.  I love the quilting on it.  I will have photos to show you tomorrow.  Have a great day.

Happy Monday!  I hope today will bring as beautiful weather as it did today.  It was gorgeous here in San Diego.  I like it that the cooler weather has decided to arrive.  Weather forecast is calling for rain mid week...we'll see about that.  I'm working on No Klucks Here Either! this week.  I have the first turkey done with three more to go.  I'm getting some practice with the blanket stitch instead of a zigzag as I did on the first No Klucks Here!

Instead of a photo in the center of the star I plan on a quilting motif in brown thread.  Something Fall like will work. 

I finished all the blanket stitching on the leaf stems.  After the turkeys are done I'll be assembling the 16 blocks that are Twist n' Turn trimmed.  The green dot will be an inner border so all the blocks will float.  Next border will be a blueish green and then the final border a green print that looks good with the green dot.  The last two fabrics are in the first photo at the top left.

I was able to assemble Kurly Kues top and back.  I've still got some pressing to do, but this is a finish...off to Kerry's Quiting next.

Happy Birthday Karen!

Today my sister celebrates her birthday.  Here she is with her new hair style.  I believe she's taking a picture of herself...pretty good!

Knickels is ready for you Kerry!  This was certainly a larger task than what I had anticipated.  The scissors my Mom got me back in June really came in handy.

Nothing to report again this week purchased or used.  I've been spending all my week with Knickels.  Time to sit down and sew either on Kurly Kues or No Klucks Here Either!

Kaktus

Judy selected #6 to work on this month for our 2012 Challenge.  I'm really pleased to have Kaktus done already.  I have two more UFOs on the list and neither are started...  I'm hopeful with this extra time to continue on some of my projects not part of the challenge and perhaps get started on one of the two that are coming.

Kurly Kues

 During the quilt retreat this past weekend I got done with the turkey blocks less the zig zag stitching around the Steam-A-Seam turkeys.  I wanted to do this part on my Pfaff instead.  I'm familiar with it's stitching and like it a bit better than my portable Janome.  I also got done with the 16 16-patch bow ties blocks.  I wanted to put these blocks together after a long look at placement so that I can spread the fabrics out best.  I'll find time this week to finish Kurly Kues for certain.

No Klucks Here Either!

I'm making progress finishing up the workshop sample for No Klucks Here!  I led the workshop last Sunday for Friendship Quilt Guild at Paradise Quilters.  I need some more Steam A Seam 2 Lite to get the four turkeys put together.  I only had enough to start on the feathers. 

No Klucks Here Either!

This week I'm gathering up what I'll need for the quilting retreat that starts on Thursday.  Sure hope it doesn't end up being a really hot weekend.  Four projects are going into my car.  This way I'll have enough to work on and whatever inspires me most will be right at my fingers.  No Klucks Here Either!, Krabapples, Krayons, and Kurly Kues are all started with each at about the same stage of completion.
