Sunday Stash Report, June 21, 2015

I have been surprising two fellas in my family this past week.  First, my nephew is the Class of 2015 from South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia.  Thursday was his Commencement held at George Mason University Patriot Center.  He looked so handsome in his blue cap and gown while a proud family sat in the audience.  He will attend community college in the fall and bunk at home for the first school year.  Time will tell where the future leads him.  I wish him all the luck in the world!  Second, my Dad was dumbfounded to see me in town!  Since Father's Day was so close to the graduation staying to celebrate with him was a must.  My Sister joined in on the weekend.  Four of us had a wonderful lunch at the Lighthouse Restaurant and Dock Bar in Solomons, Maryland.  Yes...I got my soft shell crab fix!

Needless to say not much in the way of using stash this past week.  So therefore no changes to mention.  I did get the binding on Krossings during my flight to Virginia.  Today I finished sewing down the sleeves on all three of these quilts.

Sunday Stash Report, June 14, 2015

My add for this week is from Beverly's.  It came home with me for Kamikaze that I have been working on lately.

 I started assembling the blocks that were finished at the quilting retreat this past weekend and found lots of them, particularly the red blocks, were assembled wrong.  So guess what I'll be doing today?

 I prepared the binding and sleeve for Krossings.  I plan to work on this during my flight to Virginia that takes place this week.  Austin, my nephew, graduates this week from high school.  I'm looking forward to my all too quick visit.

Today I will claim the quilt carry bag yardage for the black and white bag I gifted my friend Debra.  Kerry will get to claim the red and white bag since the fabrics came from her stash.

Lastly I have Kool Krystals and Krazy Kookoos done.  I am very pleased by how each one finished.

Design Wall Monday, May 25, 2015

I have been busy lately mostly with hand sewing.  Kerry's Quilting has me busy and I'm loving every bit of it.  I now have all the rick rack that is the flower stems of Krazy Kookoos done.  Each one of those stems took nearly an hour to sew down...of course some of that time was intermittently interrupted by KoKo.  When he wants attention there is no sewing!  He has to sit right on the spot I'm trying to sew.  Oh but I love my fur baby =^.^=.  Eyes on Krazy Kookoos still need to be sewn on.  I'll have a bunch of green eyed kookoos soon!  Kool Krystals sits ready for hand sewing too.

The sewing that I have been doing has been on Quilt Carry Bags.  I'm brushing up on the instructions as I will be giving a workshop at Paradise Sewing next Sunday, May 31st to make it.  Mom will be in town then at helping me.  If you are in the area and interested in having one for your own call them and join us.

I hope that you are enjoying your Memorial Day and remembering the many who made it possible.  Enjoy your week ahead.  I'm hoping mine goes by swiftly because Mom is coming to visit arriving Friday.  I haven't seen her since September although we talk nearly every day; it is not the same as being with her.

Sunday Stash Report, May 24, 2015

A little late with this post, but one that is important to keep me accountable!  DH dropped me by Beverly's in Clairmont for that dark piece that is blue for the binding of Kool Krystals.  This project by Bonnie Hunter called Scrap Crystals was made in a workshop with her late last year.  I just picked it up from Kerry's Quilting on Friday.  The binding has already been prepared and machine sewn in place.  More time to sit in front of the television with DH and very soon Mom!

The other three pieces are all FQs that will soon go into my Komatose project.  Komatose is Bonnie Hunter's Lazy Sunday.  So this week there is another enhancement.  Overall though I'm doing very well using my stash.  I'll be counting a couple of Quilt Carry Bags soon.

Kool Krystals
2015 January UFO - #2

Kool Krystals starts here this morning.  I made quite a bit of progress since last week.  The sashing goes quick as do the 9-patches.  At last count 15 more sashing units and six more 9-patches to assemble.  Then there is an outer pieced border to finish off the stars.  There is also a solid outer border that I will probably not add...we'll see how well it ends at the pieced border.

Nothing for week two of 2015 stats to report.  We have a rainy day in San Diego today.  It will be good to work on Kool Krystals, watch some football, and listen to the rain that hits the gutters.

Good progress today on Kool Krystals.  I have all 20 blocks assembled...not pressed yet :(  The sashing is started and so are the 9-patch corner stones.  I will be doing the 9-patches with 1 1/2" squares instead of the faster strips.  I have so many 1 1/2" squares that it is a great opportunity to carry on the awesome variety that I already have in the HSTs and sashing corners that you can see form a star when connected to the 9-patches.

Kool Krystals with 18 of the 20 blocks complete.  I can finish three in an evening after work and kitchen duty.  Three were done last night and the other three this evening.  Just two more to assemble.  Looks like I am on track for starting the sashing tomorrow night.  Oh don't worry about the unit second in from the bottom in the photo below.  It is sewn together already and all the others aren't.  I am trying not to put too many of the same fabrics in a block.

Hope your "Hump Day" was good to you.  Plenty cold in many parts of the country.  San Diego is getting a bit of a warming during the day, but for us winter like temperatures in the evening.  This trend is to change starting tomorrow after the last three days.  Stay warm my friends...

Design Wall Monday, January 5, 2015

I have some progress to show on my design wall since yesterday.  Three more blocks assembled leaving eight more to go before sashing on Kool Krystals.

The three groups of units at the bottom are ready for final assembly.  The five groups at the top still need more HSTs.  Did I tell you the pattern required 684 HSTs?  I have them ready to be trimmed during my lunch break today.  Possibly another  three units will be assembled tonight.  I'm starting to get antsy to see how the fabrics I chose in November at Memory Lane will look next to the blocks.

Sunday Stash Report, January 4, 2015

A new year and a new stash record...  I think my stash moved in and out very nicely in 2014.  I took more from it than I added which is a very good thing.  Even with all the new projects started and completed my stash treated me positively.  I think part of the trick is to build a pattern around what you have and not what you lack.  Of course it is necessary at times to visit your local quilt shop or one of the online shops for a fabric that you lack or just because...  Treat yourself to those five yard pieces during sales for the back you'll inevitably need or the neutrals that are required with nearly every project.  So you wonder what is kwiltnkats working on this very first week of 2015?

To start off with, but now put to the side, is Kurry.  Yes finally started!  This is the last old UFO that didn't finish when it was supposed to in 2011.  I takes an array of fabrics colors that you can see my project will include dark pinks to yellows to light teals to blues.  (The two at the top are consistent in the layout as is the first two on the left.)  I'm short on blues even after robbing Kerry's stash.  This shade of blue batik isn't so easy to find.  I have been to three local shops already searching, but so far no success.  There are a few more shops in the area before I throw in the towel.  Kurry will be my filler project for awhile.  I definitely want to keep up with my 2015 UFOs.

Kool Krystals, my January UFO, is coming along nicely.  Boy oh boy are there a lot of 2" HSTs to make and trim down.  Somewhere close to 700 units are required.  Once these are accomplished chain sewing makes swift assembly.  I started the weekend with two block complete from a workshop in November 2014 with Bonnie Hunter.  I had enough of HSTs  complete to make the other seven blocks.  Yesterday I spent time trimming more HSTs which puts me back to chain sewing today.  I haven't been counting so we will see how far into the 20 required blocks I can get before the next batch of HSTs need to be trimmed.  Nearly all of my HSTs are from bonus triangles.  I sure am happy Bonnie Hunter enlightened me on this neat trick.  I have all kinds of bonus triangles in various neutral/color combinations most of which will finish at 2".  They do come in handy with many patterns.

Here are my first week stats.  I'm looking forward to an incredible year of fantastic projects that start and hopefully finish from my stash.

Design Wall Monday, October 20, 2014

I am busy into my October UFO.  This one is another large design, #21.  I'm using the suggested foundation that runs through the printer.  It is a very light weight tear-away stabilizer cut into 8.5 by 11 inch sheets.  It work very well through the printer.  Janice Ellertson and Jodel Yover designed this project called Beauty 'n Check.  I started it in a class sometime ago and now it's time to finish it.

I really like foundation piecing; the results are so exact.  It does take a bit to get going after working on pieced projects, but once you start it's hard to stop.  The above pieces were my start.  I put together several units before I found my direction.  These pieces won't be used in the project.  Auditioning against the very earthy green batik brought me to the conclusion that the fabrics below would be best.   

From the bottom moving up, the black on black, ivory print, and green batik will be used in all blocks.  These are my constants.  The beigey background, black and tan dot, bright orange and teal and purple print will be scattered about depending on the block's design.  There are 25 large block designs and 5 small block designs to pick and choose from.  So far my large block designs are #1, #3, #5, #8, #10, and #23.  After #21 in the first photo I plan to tackle #16.  It is up to you to decide how many blocks and the size for your project.

Still in pieces and it will not be the final layout...this is what I have accomplished so far.  Not sure I will be able to finish before the end of the month, but I will be giving it my best shot.  My DH came up with a splendid name for my Beauty 'n Check; how about Koncentric Konnection?

I mentioned yesterday I would share my first blocks from the workshops I attend last week with Bonnie Hunter.  The one above is part of Winston Ways.  There are a total of 30 blocks that make up this design along with a checkerboard border with those cute red and white four-patches.

These two blocks are from the workshop Scrap Crystals.  Nearly all of my neutral and blue HSTs are from bonus triangles.  I really like how the secondary pattern (the star surrounded by neutrals in the middle) comes together.  This project has sashing and a nine-patch cornerstone at each union.  The project will need 20 blocks.  I'm in the process of figuring out names for these two projects...I'd love hearing any ideas you might have.  Remember I'm all about using the letter "K"!  I won't be getting back to either of these projects until next year is my guess right now.  I suppose they are the start of my 2015 UFOs.

My fabric stash statistics took a little plunge this week to have the right fabrics to finish Scrap Crystals (yet to be named...).  I've been busy with Bonnie Hunter as my house guest as well as the Sunshine Guild Meeting, and two workshops through Sunshine Quilt Guild that I attended.  Since my workshop blocks are on my "wall" you will need to return tomorrow to hear all about them.

The commotion of the week concluded on Thursday evening after a fond farewell to my friend.  She was sure happy to be returning home from a hectic week of lectures and workshops.  Three lectures and five workshops; all of which were pretty much back to back to back.  Bonnie is such a pleasure to be around. Her next lecture and workshops are in Texas and then it's off on a working cruise with five other teachers on the Caribbean.  What a life!

Early on in the week I finished Kolumbia and Saturday I finished Kaktus.  Don't you just love the quilting?  No matter the quilting design Kerry has a way with her quilting that I'm never disappointed with.  I can't wait for the next one to finish...bring on the binding!

Thursday evening brought the first Midnight Flight Swap package.  Elizabeth takes the honor of being first this swap.  The turn in date isn't until November 30th, but sending them in when you finish is just fine.

Another complete finish!  This is a FREE pattern on Bonnie Hunter's website.  It is called Fourth of July.  I will be donating this one to a Veterans Home in Southern Maryland.  Next one to bind is Kolumbia and then the big one Kaktus.

So my wall still has Buggy Barn birds on it.  I am anxious to get back to it, but other quilting priorities have come above it.

Krazy Kookoos

I have been getting ready for my two workshops with Bonnie Hunter.  Winston Ways and Scrap Crystals are this week at Memory Lane Quilt Shop.  There is going to be a wonderful trunk show at the Sunshine's Guild meeting tomorrow evening.  I have all my "Bonnie" quilts made since January 2012 ready to present.  As everyone at the meeting will expect I have quite a lot to share =^.^=

I am also working on my Midnight Flight Swap units.  I have one of the two neutral squares sewn on each of the 144 Unit 1s and 144 Unit 2s.  Next will be the trimming and then sewing on the remaining neutral square.  This swap isn't due until around Thanksgiving time, but that's when the new "Bonnie" mystery starts...  If you are interested in those details you can find them on her website.

Now if that is not enough after this week I will be scrambling on my October UFO.  At the suggestion of my DH there has been a change of names.  Koncenteric Konnection is at the very beginning stages of assembly.  There is a lot of work yet to go...it pretty much looks like an impossibility that it will finish...but I will certainly give it a go.

Purchase for Koliding Krosses and Winston Ways

First to show is my purchase for this week.  I picked these two fabrics up at Beverly's on Friday.  The blue is to be the back for Koliding Krosses and the black is the final black fabric needed for the collection of 30 blacks for Winston Ways.  I just about have all of Winston Ways cut and ready for October's Bonnie Hunter Workshop.  I'll be taking two workshops the other will be Scrap Crystals.

Krazy Krones was finished last week.  This oh so adorable Buggy Barn design is called If the Hat Fits.  I honestly think the noses look more like pickles...don't you?  The quilting which is difficult to see is perfect.  It is called Gossamer; a spider web.  Kerry's Quilting did an awesome job with it.  I'm ready for Halloween!

Konqueror

Konqueror came home with me Friday.  Kerry had it waiting for me.  The fabrics aren't the brightest, but I do like how they all work together.  I'll be attaching sleeve, binding, and label during the week.  This is a pattern by Joyce Weeks of Geoff's Mom Pattern Company called Survivors.  The quilting on it is called Shell Shock and thread is Signet Ring.

Krackerjack is keeping me busy right  now.  There is a setting that goes between the star blocks.  I have at least two more stars to assemble...depends on how many of the 2 1/2" corner of the star blocks I can get out of this fabric.  I have plenty of the white and the flower centers.  We'll just have to see.  Krackerjack is a pattern by Bloc Loc called Star Fusion.

Sunday Stash Report, May 18, 2014

Good day everyone!  We are getting closer to normal in our beautiful town of San Diego.  The fires have reeked havoc on us most of this last week.  A few are still at evacuation centers, but they are being told that either today or at the latest if all conditions continue on the current plan should be back in their homes not later than Monday.  Unfortunately there have been several who don't have homes to return to.  So sad for them, a time to rejoice at what we have.  For them, a time to rebuild.  I wish the best for a speedy process.

There is a lot of cutting involved in the two workshops I am signed up for in October with Bonnie Hunter.  I have finished Scrap Crystals and almost there with Winston Ways.  I need a few more sets of blue, black, gold and neutral to finish.  I have one more place to look at home and then Kerry's on Friday.  We really get a break from enhancing and using our stashes when we shop from each other.  When the time comes these two projects will really take yardage away from my stash.

I do have a finish to claim this week.  My UFO for May is complete.  To be honest this is not a project I would be scrambling to want to make at this time.  It has finished nicely.  I plan to use the darkest of the blues for the binding.  Not sure what I will select for a quilting thread or pattern.  I suppose so many years ago my tastes in quilting designs was different...perhaps this is why I haven't been anxious to check this design off my want to do list.  Well now I can thanks to Aunt Marti's 2014 UFO Challenge.  You can see all my 2014 UFOs here.
