Kartwheels

Today I have on my Design Wall Judy Niemeyer's design Mariner's Star.  Years ago I went in on a purchase of Judy's patterns with a few other quilters.  This was just one of three that I purchased.  If you know Judy's designs they are beautiful.  I started out making this in 2010 and got stuck on the melon part of the star.  I couldn't decide what fabric it should be.  In 2011 my project became a UFO...  Since black and white go with just about everything STOP the debate and use one for part of the two piece melon.  Going to get this project done in 2013...

All of the arcs are done.  The hard part for me is sewing the three sections together... CURVES!  I know there are lots of ways to tackle them, but I keep going back to the pins every 1/4".  I'm not a fan of CURVES although they look great...eek!...give me a straight seam any day.  Applique isn't such a bad thing compared to CURVES...

I'll be using six different reds for the center melon piece.  Mixing up each arc/melon section with four different  combinations.  Got to keep the scrappy interest going in my projects.  If you noticed the pattern cover in the first photo there are stars to be foundation pieced as well and then that totally wild border also foundation pieced.  My background fabric is from Sew Batik; one of my most favorite resource for wide batik backs.

Kartwheels is sure to keep me busy until May's UFO has been identified.  Be inspired more through the links at Patchwork Times.  Come back soon to see progress on this and other projects from my sewing room.

Wow, look what you got yourself into. This will be another beauty. You are something else, I think your middle name is "Challenge"

Wow, where has this one been hiding? It is fabulous, Sandi!
Funny, I would rather do curves than applique. To each his own. : )
I have one of Judy's Mariner's Compass books and have made two compasses, but never put them into a quilt.

Oh, this will be a beauty. I've never tried any of Judy's patterns...maybe when I'm caught up and looking for a challenge.

I love Judy patterns. I never would have thought to use the black and white check with the batiks, that is brilliant!!
